Drawing from a student body of 13,000, San Diego City College offers a growing intercollegiate sports program that features eleven intercollegiate teams, experienced coaches whose talents have taken them to the Olympics and professional levels in their sports and facilities that include a state-of-the-art fitness center; baseball, soccer, and softball fields; a gymnasium for volleyball and badminton; tennis courts; access to nearby Balboa Park; and a new $11
million gymnasium. Located in the heart of one of America's most exciting cities, San Diego City College has offered opportunities for approximately 150 student-athletes in past years - this summer it will host the Nike Softball Camps in San Diego.
Directing the camp is long time Nike Softball Camp instructor and Head Softball Coach LeeAnn Taylor. Coming off her sixth season as the Head Softball Coach at San Diego City College and entering her 14th in the 2010 season at the collegiate level, LeeAnn was named "Pacific Coast Conference Coach of the Year" in both 2006 and 2007 after leading her team to the 2007 Conference Championship. An assistant
coach at Cal State Northridge in 2003 & 2004, LeeAnn helped lead CSUN to consecutive NCAA regional play-off appearances. LeeAnn was the Assistant Softball Coach at Point Loma Nazarene University from 1998-2002 and was honored to be a part of the 2002 NAIA National Coaching Staff of the Year. During those five years, PLNU qualified for consecutive post-season play and made two trips to the College World Series, finishing runner-up in 2002.
LeeAnn is a native San Diegan who attended San Diego Mesa College and was named an All-State Second Baseman her freshmen year earning a full scholarship to Cal State Northridge and as a junior was on the team that finished National Runner-Up.
Joining LeeAnn on staff will be Cheryl Schaefer, interim Head Softball Coach at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. After a stellar playing career, Schaefer joined the PLNU coaching staff in 2004 and served as associate head coach for the last two seasons. During those six years, the Sea Lions have compiled a 271-86 overall record (.759 winning percentage) and qualified for the NAIA National Championship Tournament each season. PLNU was national runner up in 2007 and finished third at nationals on two occasions (2006, 2008). Schaefer has also helped mentor 28 All-GSAC players and 13 All-Americans.
Schaefer (then Bolding) was a dominating player for PLNU from 2000-03. She was a three-time first-team All-American, a three-time GSAC Player of the Year (2001-03) and a two-time NAIA Player of the Year (2001, 2002).She still ranks in the NAIA top-10 in numerous offensive categories and her name is in the PLNU university career and single season record book in 17 places. She was inducted into the PLNU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.
In addition to her collegiate career, Schaefer played for Arizona Heat, a professional softball franchise in the National Pro Fastpitch League, for two years (2004-05).
