/images/sports/BASE/campimages/yberra3.jpgWhen Yogi Berra Stadium opened in the spring of 1998, baseball fans in New Jersey gained access to one of the new jewels of minor league baseball facilities in the country. Yogi Berra Stadium is home to the New Jersey Jackals, who have won four league championships in the past eleven seasons. The stadium offers seating of 3,784, plus 2,000 lawn seats, and is the home to the Yogi Berra Museum and Education Center.

Joe Calfapietra, the manager of the New Jersey Jackals, is this summer’s Nike Baseball Camp director. Calfapietra is in his seventh year as skipper of the Jackals; but he is in his tenth season as a manager in professional baseball. Joe was honored to receive his 400th win this summer as well as named Manager-of-the-Year in 2004 with the Jackals. In 2000 he became the youngest manager in the history of the Northern League when he became the field boss of the Allentown Ambassadors at the age of 29.

After guiding the Ambassadors through the 2002 season, Calfapietra was selected as the Northern League’s Manager-of-the-Year while piloting the Gary Southshore Rail Cats. Calfapietra starred at Eastern College in Pennsylvania where he was a two-time All American at first base before beginning his coaching career with Duluth-Superior in the Northern League and Aberdeen in the Prairie League. Calfapietra then spent five years as the Director of Baseball Operations with Allentown before he was named their manager in 2000.

/images/sports/BASE/campimages/Jackals Logo.jpgJoe is also the Owner/Director of Baseball Instruction At Its Best Academy and Instructional Baseball Inc. (IBI) Camps since 1994. Current and former Jackal players, professional instructors and Jackal coaches will assist Joe this summer.

Helping to run the camp for the 12th straight year once again will be Jim Whalen.  Jim was a collegiate pitcher at Montclair State University where he was a member of the 2000 Division 3 National Championship team.  Jim is a Physical Education Teacher at Valleyview Middle School in Denville and is the Assistant Varsity Baseball Coach at nearby West Essex High School.  He has a passion for working with boys and girls to make sure that every camper has a positive experience.  Jim currently lives in Clifton, NJ.  He is also known at Jackals games as "Big Jim" as he is the on-field voice of the NJ Jackals in game promotions.

Under the direction of Rutgers University Head Coach Fred Hill, every camper will go through a variety of drills, lectures, and games that Coach Hill uses with his own players at Rutgers. The focus of the camp will be around teaching each individual the proper way to play the game, while also stressing the importance of having fun and enjoying everything that the great game of baseball has to offer. From little league thru high school each camper will be taught aspects of the game based on their own personal skill level.
