/images/sports/RUNN/campimages/04-run-022.jpgThe NIKE Track and Field Camp at Stanford University is called the “Camp of Champions” for good reason - Stanford enjoys international recognition for its ability to turn talented young athletes into world-class performers. The Camp of Champions offers athletes the rare opportunity to experience firsthand the life of a Stanford student-athlete.

Cobb Track and Angel Field is host to thousands of athletes each year. World, American, collegiate and high school records have all been set on this amazing facility. The Track has hosted the USA National Championships, USA Junior Nationals, and is home to the prestigious Stanford Invitational. During each training session, campers select an event of their choice for specialization. Each group is assigned an experienced event coach, for specialized training and individual attention.

Edrick Floreal
, the Franklin P. Johnson Director of Track & Field, welcomes all athletes between the ages of 12 and 18 to the 2009 Stanford Track & Field Camp. As director of both the cross country and track & field programs, Floreal has coached school record holders, Pac 10 champions, NCAA All-Americans, NCAA champions and Olympic medalists. A two-time Olympian, five-time NCAA champion, and eight time All- American, Floreal oversees one of the finest cross country and track programs in the nation.

The Track & Field program at Stanford is proud to announce the new addition of Toby Stevenson and Kyle White to their coaching staff.  Stevenson will co-direct our 2010 camp and is a former Olympian.

Kyle White is entering his second year as an assistant coach with Stanford. He works with the sprinters, short hurdlers, and high jumpers. White comes to Stanford from the University of Arkansas where he spent the last two years as an assistant coach under legendary Razorbacks head coach, John McDonnell.

White coached J-Mee Samuels to third place finishes in both the 60 and 200 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2008. Samuels finished the season ranked in the top-four in both events in Arkansas history. Under White's guidance Arkansas' 4x100-meter relay also qualified for the NCAA Championships in both 2007 and 2008.

In His first year at Stanford University, White coached Ryan Fisicaro to the indoor school record in the 60m.,  He also guided Zach Chandy and the men’s 4 x 100m Relay to the NCAA Regional Outdoor Championships.

White has worked with six athletes that competed in the Olympics and the World Championships. They include Americans Tyson Gay, Wallace Spearmon, Derrick Williams, Samuels, Canadian Jared Connaughton and Jamaican 2-time Olympic Gold-Medalist Veronica Campbell.

White, a native of Arlington, Texas, has 16 years of Division I coaching experience and spent eight seasons as an assistant under head coach John Sauerhage at Texas-Arlington. During his time coaching the Mavericks' sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and relays, White's athletes earned 106 individual Southland Conference titles. He was also a member of eight men's and women's Southland Conference team championships.

Prior to his arrival in Arlington, White spent time as an assistant coach at Bucknell (1996-98), where he coached 14 Patriot League champions and was a member of four Patriot League team championships, and at East Tennessee State (1994-96), where he coached two Southern Conference champions and was a member of two Southern Conference team championships, under legendary head coach Dave Walker.

White competed on the collegiate level for the University of Arkansas (1986-89) and earned three All-Southwest Conference accolades. During his tenure with the Arkansas track and field program, the squad won two NCAA titles and five SWC championships.

Campers meet and learn from Stanford’s impressive coaching staff that consistently produces NCAA All-Americans, national champions and Olympians. The camp counselors include current and former Stanford track &field athletes who work with campers in small groups and offer their advice on training and competing as elite student athletes.

Special speakers include 1992 Olympic 100m Hurdles Silver Medalist LaVonna Martin-Floreal, 14 time Stanford All-American and 2008 Olympian Erica Mclain, and 2004 Olympic Decathlete, Paul Terek.

Throughout the week, training and instruction are provided in breakout sessions taught by NIKE sponsored guest athletes and coaches. Topics include a variety of subjects related to college and elite track& field such as training, competing, motivation, nutrition, and team bonding. A representative from the Stanford admissions office attends one session dedicated to the college recruiting process, offering valuable advice to the attendees. There are many opportunities for individual and group discussions.

The program is designed for athletes with the desire and special aptitude to become more competitive in an event.  It is challenging and intense, helping the young athlete grow mentally and physically tougher for competition and training.  Campers can choose from all disciplines: throws (shot put, hammer, discus, javelin), sprints, hurdles, middle distance (including steeplechase), and jumps (high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault).

Note: Pole vaulters should bring their own poles. Limited lengths and sizes will be available.
