New Camp in 2008!
US Sports Camps and the Nike Basketball Camps are excited to offer this camp at Wingate University, located just 35 miles east of Charlotte, NC. Campers will reside in the campus dormitories and train daily at the Charles A. Cannon Complex, the home court of the Bulldogs.
CONGRATS TO COACH NELSON AND COACH SAVINO ON A FANTASTIC YEAR!
Some of the highlights include:
* 26-8 overall record
* Won the South Atlantic Conference Tournament (guarantees the automatic bid to ncaa tourney) which was the first time Wingate accomplished this since 1996
* Won the South Atlantic Regional Tournament (first time Wingate has accomplised this since 1996)
* Earned a trip to the Elite Eight
* Point guard was named MVP of SAC tourney and SAR tourney, she was named 1st team Academic All American and 3rd team All American as she was 2nd in the nation in assists, assists to turnover ratio and 4th in steals.
* Coach Nelson was named SAC coach of the year.

Directing the camp is first year Head Women's Basketball Coach and longtime Nike Basketball Camp Director,
Barbara Nelson. Coach Nelson has served as the head varsity girls’ basketball coach at Providence Day School in Charlotte for 21 seasons. She has compiled a 437-176 record with seven NCISAA state championships during her tenure with the Chargers. PDS was named the Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 champions five times. In addition, Providence Day won the CISAA basketball conference crown nine times under Nelson’s watch.
In 2006-07, Nelson led the Chargers to a 30-4 overall record, a state title and a conference championship. The Charlotte Observer named Nelson its girls’ basketball Coach of the Year for her efforts this season, the fourth time she has received this prestigious honor. Nelson has compiled a winning record in 19 of her 21 seasons with the Chargers. The 30 wins this year were a career-best for Nelson.
Barbara Nelson has ties to the South Atlantic Conference. She is a graduate of Presbyterian College with a B.S. degree in Psychology. A four-year letter winner in basketball for the Blue Hose, Nelson served two years on the Scotsman Club board for her alma mater.
The accolades her Providence Day players have received could fill several scrapbooks. During her time at, Coach Nelson coached Parade All-Americans, Gatorade NC Player of the Years and many other individuals that went on to receive collegiate scholarships. Nelson’s involvement in the game of basketball extends beyond the Providence Day campus. A 12-year participant in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), Nelson was a high school All-American selection committee member in 2006-07. She has been a Nike Basketball Camp Director from 1999 to the present.

Helping Coach Nelson at camp will be Assistant Coach,
Debra Savino. Coach Savino joined the Wingate University women’s basketball coaching staff in the summer of 2007. Savino was an assistant women’s basketball coach at nearby Queens University of Charlotte in 2006. She has also been a Physical Education teacher and the head basketball and field hockey coach at Charlotte Country Day since 2001 and the Camp Director for basketball and field hockey since 2002. Savino was named the Mecklenburg County field hockey Coach of the Year in the fall of 2006.
