Just 20 miles north of Baltimore, the McDonogh School provides a perfect setting for a Nike Lacrosse Camp with its first class facilities, comfortable dorms and campus-dining hall.
Directing the camp is Muffie Bliss and Melissa Miranda Jones.
Coach Bliss was named McDaniel’s head field hockey and women’s lacrosse coaches following a successful stint as the interim coach of the women’s lacrosse team in the spring of 2004.
After two years as head coach of both squads, she surrendered the helm of the Green Terror field hockey program last year to focus on women’s lacrosse. Her focus payed off after just one season when she led McDaniel to the ECAC South championship and program-record 14 victories last year.
In her first year at the helm, Bliss’ enthusiasm manifested itself in the form of the best women’s lacrosse season to date in the program’s three decades. Led by the then-23-year-old interim coach, the Green Terror turned in a 13-4 record, including a program-best nine-game winning streak. McDaniel followed its first Centennial Conference (CC) playoff appearance with a run to the ECAC semifinals under Bliss in 2004 before advancing to the ECAC championship game the next season. In her five seasons at the helm, Bliss has guided the squad to a 56-30 mark.
Bliss began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at McDaniel in the fall of 2003, immediately following a successful academic and athletic career at Goucher College. She completed her master’s in education at McDaniel in the summer of 2004.
A three-time all-conference selection in field hockey and two-time nod in lacrosse, she also received all-region honors on the lacrosse field and was selected to play in the North/South Senior All-Star Game. Bliss was also a three-time field hockey captain and two-year lacrosse captain for the Gophers.
Her arrival on the Hill helped the field hockey team to its first-ever CC championship and NCAA playoff berth. As a first-year coach, she assisted with coordinating the team’s defense. Her unrivaled work ethic translated into McDaniel boasting one of the nation’s best defenses, surrendering just 0.64 goals per game.
Coach Miranda Jones enters her 4th season at the helm of the Green Terror field hockey program. In her first two seasons on the sidelines, she has led the squad to a 16-21 record that included a Centennial Conference semifinal appearance in her debut campaign.
While earning her master’s degree at James Madison University, she served the previous two seasons as an assistant with the Eastern Mennonite field hockey team. While working with the Royals, the squads registered a combined 15 wins, including 10 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
Prior to her time at EMU, she was at Washington and Lee from 2002-04, serving as an assistant with field hockey and women’s lacrosse teams and was integral in the success of those two programs.
While on the sidelines with the women’s lacrosse team in 2003 and 2004, the Generals went a combined 30-7, winning the ODAC tournament both years and advancing to the NCAA Division III regional semifinals. The squad posted a perfect 8-0 mark in ODAC play in 2003 before finishing 7-1 during the 2004 campaign.
On the field hockey sideline, the 2002 and 2003 squads posted identical 10-9 marks, including going 6-3 in the ODAC and advancing to the conference semifinals. The recipient of the NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women’s Enhancement Grant in 2002, she also worked as an athletic administrative intern during her two years at Washington and Lee.
In addition to her time with the Generals and Royals, Miranda Jones has served as a coach with the United States Field Hockey Futures Program since 2002 in addition to working numerous camps and at the U.S. Field Hockey National Hockey Festival in 2002 and 2004.
In addition to earning a bachelor of science in physical education from Longwood in 1999, she earned her master of science degree in athletic administration and coaching from James Madison in May 2006.
