US Sports Camps and the Nike Basketball Camps are excited to offer this camp at Wingate University, located just 35 miles east of Charlotte, NC. Campers will reside in the campus dormitories and train daily at the Charles A. Cannon Complex, the home court of the Bulldogs.

 

Directing the camp is Head Women's Basketball Coach and longtime Nike Basketball Camp Director, Barbara Nelson. 

 

Coach Nelson is currently in her third year at the helm of the Wingate program, after a fantastic first season. The Bulldogs advanced to the 2007-08 NCAA Division II Elite Eight as champions of the South Atlantic Region. Wingate (26-8 overall) completed the 2007-08 season as the 10th-ranked team in the country, according to the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll. Wingate also won the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament on the way to the Elite Eight. 

 

Prior to joining the Wingate family, Nelson was the head varsity girls’ basketball coach at Providence Day School in Charlotte. She compiled a 437-176 record with seven NCISAA state championships in 21 seasons with the Chargers. PDS was named the Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 champions five times. In addition, Providence Day won the CISAA basketball conference crown nine times under Nelson’s watch

The accolades her Providence Day players have received could fill several scrapbooks. During her time at, Coach Nelson coached Parade All-Americans, Gatorade NC Player of the Years and many other individuals that went on to receive collegiate scholarships.  Nelson’s involvement in the game of basketball extends beyond the Providence Day campus. A 12-year participant in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), Nelson was a high school All-American selection committee member in 2006-07. She has been a Nike Basketball Camp Director from 1999 to the present.

 

Last year, Coach Nelson was the chosen as the U16 USA Basketball Head Coach, and guided USA to the FIBA Americas gold medal, which qualified the U17s to represent the USA for the World Championships in France this summer. For 2010, Coach Nelson will also represent USA as the Head Coach of the U17s.

 

Coach Nelson and her staff have put together two camp programs within our session for every level of basketball player. When you sign up below, you will be asked to choose “Complete Skills” or “Elite” programs.

 

Our Complete Skills program is designed for beginners and intermediate players. It will feature our full camp instructional program as well as swimming and daily games/contests. The Elite program is designed for the more advanced player. Coach Nelson will take players through her advanced skill progressions with emphasis on helping you succeed at your next level. This is for the serious basketball player only. Both programs will take place at the same time, and some drills and station work may occur together.
