Stanford University -John Whitlinger -
Stanford,
CA
The 2008 Nike Tennis Camp at Stanford celebrates over 30 years of tennis excellence. This overnight and extended day camp is designed for kids of all abilities, ages 9-18 (overnight campers must be 11 or older). During the week of June 28, in addition to the general camp, Stanford offers a National Tournament Training Camp session.
The camp is directed by the Stanford Head Men's Coach, John Whitlinger, who is in his fourth season as Head Coach after serving 18 seasons as the associate for Dick Gould. Whitlinger took over the Head Coaching duties in 2005 from Gould, who assumed the position of Director of Tennis for the University.
Named Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 2006, John is now in his 22nd season with the Cardinals and has established himself as one of the nation's top collegiate coaches. For 18 seasons he served as the associate coach to Dick Gould and under the tutelage of the pair over an 18 year period (1987-2004), the Cardinal posted a 396-58 (.872) record and claimed nine NCAA team titles. A former two-time All-American at Stanford himself, John joined an elite group of players when he won the NCAA triple-crown in 1974. After having co-directed the National Training Camp for 18 years, this will be his fourth year as the Head Director of camp.
Staff
In addition to John Whitlinger, the tennis program features two on-court 'Master Instructors' who help direct the teaching staff and work closely with the campers. Co-directing the camp and one of the Master Instructors is Stanford's Men's Tennis Assistant Coach, Brandon Coupe. A former All-American at San Jose State University, Coupe spent 10 years as an ATP Tour Player and was recently the Head Professional at the Tiburon Peninsula Club. From 1994-2003, Coupe was an ATP Tour Player. During his professional career, he participated in 14 Grand Slam events and was a 2002 U.S. Open doubles quarterfinalist. He played with and against some of the world's greatest players, including Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, James Blake, Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt and Boris Becker.
FacilitiesFacilities at Stanford include 18 courts (17 lighted outdoor courts), 12 of which are part of Taube Tennis Stadium, one of the finest facilities in the country. The average weekly enrollment is 100 campers. Off-court activities include field games, a trip to Malibu Grand Prix, a camp dance, and watching popular movies.
