Nike Basketball Camps is excited to host another year of youth camps with A Step Ahead (ASA) at the Hyannis Youth Center in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Both half-day and full day options will be available at this 2015 summer location.

A Step Ahead (ASA) Basketball camps are designed for the player looking to improve his or her game. Our camp schedule is a healthy balance of learning and enjoyment while always maintaining a competitive environment.

Brendan Smith
Co-Director

Brendan Smith

Brendan Smith is the Owner and Director of A Step Ahead Incorporated (ASA) established-1997.  In 2014 the ASA staff was responsible for directing and operating over 20 Nike camps in New England.  Coach Smith is responsible for staffing, basketball curriculum and policies-procedures for each summer camp.

 Prior to each event, ASA Coaches are well versed in camp schedule, basketball teaching points, and most importantly maintaining the traditions set forth by Coach Smith.

In addition to his duties at ASA, Smith has served boys' varsity basketball coach at Boston Latin School since the 2007-08 season.  During his tenure, Smith has lead the Wolfpack to two DCL Championships, and five tournament births. 
 
Smith has previously coached men's college basketball at Mt. Ida College, and high school basketball at Newton North High School. Most recently, Smith successfully completed the requirements to become a MIAA/MSSAA certified coach.  In 2010 Smith passed both the written and floor exams of referee school to join the referee fraternity and became a member of Board 27. He earned his undergraduate degree in Human Performance & Fitness at Umass Boston and received his Masters of Education degree from Cambridge College.

Elizabeth Gilmore

Elizabeth Gilmore, former point guard at Dartmouth College and semi-pro player, will be co-directing our Nike Basketball Camp at Hyannis Youth Center.

Gilmore was named Ivy League Player of the Year and led Dartmouth to the 1993-94 and 1994-95 Ivy Championships along with an NCAA Tournament bid. She led the Big Green in assists and steals and ranks first all-time in career steals per game and season as well as second in all-time career assists. After her collegiate career Gilmore played semi-pro ball in Germany. She is currently teaching physical education in Weymouth and spends summers coaching basketball at various camps

Camp Details

Complete Skills

This program is intended to help players develop athletically. The individual camp is a great opportunity for young basketball players looking to develop and refine their fundamental basketball skills. This program also includes a curriculum for intermediate/ advanced players looking to enhance their skill set at the post, wing, or guard position. Emphasis is placed on fundamental development, shooting, offensive moves, defense, rebounding, team play, and more.

Check-in

Co-Ed Session I check-in: Monday, July 6th at 8:30AM
Co-Ed Session II check-in: Monday, July 13th at 8:30AM
Half-Day Camp Hours are: MON-FRI 9AM-12PM
Full Day Camp Hours are: MON-THURS 9AM-3PM and FRI 9AM-2PM
*Half-Day Session is recommended for campers ages 7-10. 

Upon arrival, all participants are evaluated by the staff so that their own instructional needs can be addressed throughout the week. In addition, campers will be evaluated and then split up into smaller groups according to age and ability.

Co-Ed Session I closing ceremony: Friday, July 10th at 11:30AM for Half-Day, 2PM for Full Day
Co-Ed Session II closing cermony: Friday, July 17th at 2PM
Parents are invited to attend! Departure immediately following the closing ceremony.

Camp Meals

Lunch is not included. Please bring your own lunch. We will also have a concession stand open for snack and drink purchases.

Transportation

Transportation is not provided by the camp to or from any airports. If you are flying to or from camp, we recommend using an airport shuttle service. Please schedule flights as close as you can to the check-in times on the first day and check-out times on the last day.

Registration Packet

A detailed camper registration packet containing check-in location, health/release forms, emergency contact numbers, and a checklist of things to bring will be emailed to all registered campers prior to the start of camp. The US Sports Camps health and release forms do not require a doctor's signature and they will be collected on the first day of camp. The State of Massachusetts requires a copy of camp participants’ most recent physical and record of immunizations, shots, etc., in addition to the US Sports Camps health and release form.  

Scholarships

We cannot offer scholarships due to NCAA regulations. Our affiliation with NCAA coaches and schools puts us in a position where any scholarship money can be seen as an inducement to a future collegiate athlete. This puts our coaches and our host universities in jeopardy of damaging their status with the NCAA and incurring penalties at the hands of their organizing body.

Group Discounts

If five or more campers register together, as a group by mail or fax, each camper will receive a $20 discount. If 10 or more campers register together, as a group by mail or fax, each camper will receive a $40 discount. Click "Get Brochure" above and print the application. If all members of your group pay with a Visa or MasterCard, feel free to fax your applications to 415-479-6061 to expedite processing. Late or individual registrations are not eligible to receive the group discount.

Facilities

The HYCC is a 105,000 sq. ft. full service community center that primarily services the youth of the Town of Barnstable which includes the school district's athletic departments and after-school programs.  The gymnasium includes a full size competition basketball court with two full cross courts and portable seating for 500 spectators along with an elevated three lane walking track.
