Directing our camp is SmartHoops founder and former Duke point guard Richard Ford. After a successful high school career, Richard enrolled at Duke and worked his way from a mere day to day varsity practice player as a freshman to a full member of the varsity team, then to a full scholarship player, and ultimately to a team captain – all under Hall of Fame Coach Mike Krzyzewski.Read Full Bio
His senior year, Richard received the Ted Mann Award as the Duke player contributing most to team morale and also received the Captain’s Award for team leadership. Richard also received recognition in the classroom, being named to the ACC Honor Roll for outstanding academic performance. Richard’s senior year, Duke began its impressive run of NCAA tourney appearances.
Richard has spent much of his life teaching young players intelligent basketball strategies. He has run and worked basketball camps for 20 years, and has taught male and female players from second graders to D-I college athletes in a variety of contexts. For six years, Richard co-directed a national point guard camp, teaching high school and college point guards the finer aspects of point guard play in venues from coast to coast.
Richard’s teaching approach is concept-based. In addition to intense on-court instruction, Richard also holds entertaining classroom sessions to break down the fine points of the game. Richard reinforces his concept-based instruction with video clips, personal stories, and cooperative learning/teaching approaches.
This program is intended to help players develop athletically. The individual camp is a great opportunity for young basketball players looking to develop and refine their fundamental basketball skills. This program also includes a curriculum for intermediate/advanced players looking to enhance their skill set at the post, wing or guard position. Emphasis is placed on fundamental development, shooting, offensive moves, defense, rebounding, team play, and more.
Upon arrival, all participants are evaluated by the staff so that their own instructional needs can be addressed throughout the week. In addition, campers will be evaluated and then split up into smaller groups according to age and ability.
A detailed camper registration packet containing check-in location, health/release forms, emergency contact info, and a list of things to bring will be emailed to all registered campers prior to camp. Our health and release forms do not require a doctor's signature and they will be collected on the first day of camp.
Check-in takes place between 12:00pm-2:30pm on Sunday. There will be a camp orientation meeting following check-in and parents are welcome to join their campers for this meeting. A detailed schedule for the week will be provided at that time.

We cannot offer scholarships due to NCAA regulations. Our affiliation with NCAA coaches and schools puts us in a position where any scholarship money can be seen as an inducement to a future collegiate athlete. This puts our coaches and our host universities in jeopardy of damaging their status with the NCAA and incurring penalties at the hands of their organizing body.
