US Sports Camps is pleased to bring back Drake University to it's family of camps in 2014. Drake plays host to the only Nike Junior Golf Camp in the state of Iowa! Campers have the privilege of staying on campus in the dorms and receive top-notch instruction from collegiate coaches and teaching professionals.
2014 marks our second year of camp at Drake University, which offers both an overnight and day camp option for junior golfers looking to take their game to the next level. Camp Director and Head Women's Golf Coach, Leanne Smith, is excited to help each junior golfers game, regardless of skill level and experience. Coach Smith will be joined by Men's Head Coach, Matt Lewis and current collegiate players.

Leanne Smith, who served as an assistant coach with the Drake men's and women's golf programs since 2006, now enters her fourth season as head women's golf coach for the Drake Bulldogs. Smith played in the U.S. Amateur in 2001 and 2004 as well as the 2004 U.S. Women's Publinks Championship. She won the Des Moines Women's City Tournament in 2002 and 2004 and was runner-up in the 2009 Iowa Women's Amateur Golf Championship.
The Creston, Iowa, native was a four-year letterwinner at Iowa State, earning Big 12 Academic All-Conference honors in 2002 and 2003. She earned a bachelor of science degree in marketing, with a coaching minor, in 2004.
Matt Lewis is in his third season as head coach of the Drake men's golf program. Lewis, a former first-team All-Big 12 and first-team Academic All-Big 12 performer at Iowa State, has been head golf professional at Clinton Country Club in Clinton, Iowa, since 2004. He has extensive experience with junior, collegiate, and professional players including 2007 Masters Champion, Zach Johnson.
Nike junior golfers are housed in double rooms on campus and have their meals in the dining halls, giving each camper a glimpse of the college life. Golf instruction takes place at Echo Valley Country Club a few minutes from campus which is a perfect environment to improve your game. Each day consists of breakfast, morning range instruction, lunch, afternoon course play, dinner, and evening activities. Upon arrival, all participants are evaluated by the staff so that their own instructional needs can be addressed throughout the week.
Check-In and Check-Out
Check-in occurs on Sunday, July 6th. Check-out is on Thursday, July 10th.
The Overnight fee includes all golf instruction, green fees, evening activities, housing and meals. The Day Camp option includes all golf instruction, lunch, and course play. Day campers will be dropped off and picked up at the golf course each day.
Campers are supervised 24 hours a day. The staff lives in the dormitories with the campers and participates in evening activities. Drugs, alcohol and tobacco are strictly prohibited, and constitute, along with general misconduct, grounds for dismissal from camp without a refund.
Nike Golf Schools and Jr. Camps does not provide transportation to and from airports, bus depots or train stations. The packet we send to registered campers in the spring offers suggestions on shuttle services for each specific camp.
A detailed camper registration packet containing check in location, health/release forms, emergency contact info, and a list of things to bring will be emailed to all registered campers in the Spring.
Sample Daily Schedule
- 7:30am Wake up and breakfast
- 8:45am Skills demonstrations by the staff
- 9:00am Small group instruction focusing on putting, chipping, pitching and full-swing
- Noon Lunch and relaxation
- 1:00pm Course play with focus on shot selection, course management, rules and etiquette (day campers depart following course play)
- 6:00pm Dinner on campus at Drake University
- 7:00pm Evening activities (swimming, movies, campus tour etc.)
- 10:00pm Lights out
