World Sports Camp at The Williston Northampton School

The World Sports Camp mission is to create a safe and positive sports environment, where children from around the world can interact while improving their athletic skills.

This is accomplished through positive reinforcement coaching, with skill level training, from high level, skilled coaches and counselors. World Sports Camp allows for campers to choose which sports and to what degree they will be involved. Professional coaching is offered in Basketball, Soccer, Tennis and Golf. ESL Classes are also offered as an option for the international campers. By empowering campers to make their own choices, we feel that their involvement will be more enthusiastic and they will have a greater desire to participate. Attention is given to treating all campers equally, with value and understanding given to the beginners as well as the advanced athlete.

World Sports Camp takes great pride in finding the most helpful, dedicated and qualified staff possible.  Terry and Addam Shand personally interview all of the WSC staff and have NEVER hired from a staffing agency.   In addition WSC requires a criminal and sexual background check on every employee. WSC believes that a strong staff will produce a safe and positive environment for campers to achieve both personal and athletic goals.  The return rate of the WSC Staff is approximately 80% year after year.  In addition, many of our counselors were once campers themselves at WSC.

All of the Head Coaches at WSC are either professional players or professional coaches in their respective sports.  Most of our coaches are members of their college teams or play on a club team in different parts of the world.  Overseas, Colleges and Universities do not have sport teams; therefore, athletes must join club sports organizations.

Being that 34% of our campers hail from outside the United States of America, at WSC we feel that approximately 34% of our counselor staff should also be from outside the United States of America.  We believe that having at least one staff member speak each language represented by the campers, allows those campers to feel more comfortable transitioning from home life to camp life.

In addition, every staff member, no matter how many years they have been working at WSC, MUST attend a one week orientation before the start of camp.  During this rigorous week of training, WSC reviews proper procedures for all emergency situations, mandated reporting by the state and how to properly teach and speak to children in both the athletic and dormitory settings.

WSC only hires staff members that will be able to work together to create a well balanced learning environment that caters to each camper's individual needs, both on and off the playing field.   Campers will receive a tremendous amount of individual instruction and small group instruction due to the fact that WSC has a 4 to 1 camper to counselor ratio at all times.

Counselors at WSC love working with children.  Counselors choose to work with campers because they know they can help influence a camper’s life in many positive ways.  Building self-esteem, confidence and athletic abilities, as well as teaching children how to get along with others from around the world, is what makes World Sports Camp the place that counselor and campers want to be.

Sports & Activities
An extensive sports program gives everyone a chance to participate in athletic activities. As a result of our sports scheduling, campers are able to choose what sports they want to participate in and to what degree. A camper has the ability to chose which sport they would like to participate in for each period of the day. If that camper wants to focus on 1 sport, they can do so and play a total of 8 and 1/2 hours each day of that particular sport. The amount of one-on-one training that a camper receives at WSC is unparallel in the camping world. The coaching staff will help you improve your skills in four different sports:
Basketball: From beginner to varsity player, the WSC basketball program provides excellent opportunities for player development and participation. Our expert coaches, both male and female varsity college players, provide an opportunity for all campers to develop their individual skills, as well as their team play.
Golf: The golf program (only offered for overnight campers) consists of instruction at the WSC campus, at our own driving nets, as well as off campus excursions to the local driving range and regular play at area golf courses.  Campers receive focused instruction based on their skill level and individual strengths and weaknesses, which builds each camper's skill set.  The golf program utilizes the same philosophy that is present throughout the camp, positive reinforcement coaching and skill level training. From beginner to expert, golf is a game that always allows room for improvement. At WSC we will eliminate the frustration and make your game enjoyable and fun.
The WSC golf program is designed into 3 designations of participation:

1.    Productive Golf Academy (WSC – PGA) - Golf play and instruction at the golf course each day, Monday through Friday (weather permitting).  As well as, unlimited trips to the driving range and optional practice during league time.  The WSC – PGA program includes instruction on the course one day per week, with former All – America golfer (2nd in U.S.A.) and owner of World Sports Camp, Terry G. P. Shand.  Golf is the camper’s primary sport and is their first choice of sport participation.
  •  Additional fee of $150.00 per week
2.    Casual Participants - This designation is for campers who want to play golf occasionally, attend the driving range up to 5 times per week and request the golf course at least 1 time per week. Golf is not their primary sport; however, they enjoy participating regularly.
  • Additional fee of$75.00 per week
3.    Occasional Participants - This designation is for campers who just want to play golf once in a while. Golf is not a sport that the camper looks to play often while attending WSC.  These campers will have the opportunity to go to the driving range up to 5 times per week, however, will not be able to go to the golf course.
  • Additional fee of$35.00 per week
Soccer: The number one sport played in the world is soccer. Since, 34% of campers are from outside of the United States of America, soccer is a very popular sport at WSC. From beginners to experts, coaches at WSC will help each player improve their individual and team skills. Four periods per day with a professional coach, assisted by players from clubs and teams all over the world will provide the best environment for campers to develop the love of the game.
Tennis: The WSC Tennis program is extremely strong. Players of all levels are challenged to improve to the best of their abilities. The coaching staff encourages all campers, beginners through advanced, to participate in the tennis program and improve their game. The highly qualified coaching staff will determine the skill level of a player and make it their personal duty, to make that level increase by the time the camper leaves.
World Sports Camp teaches sports based on ability level in addition to age and grade. If a camper is 10 years old, and has the ability level of a 14 year old, that camper will play with the 14 year olds who have equal ability. The only time that this will not happen is when the camper will be put in harms way because of the physical difference in size of the other campers. In addition, if a camper is 14 years old and has the ability level of a 10 year old, we will NEVER embarrass a camper, therefore, we will put that camper with other 14 year olds who are also beginners.

World Sports Camp - Day Camp
The WSC Day Camp allows children ages 6 – 16 from Western Massachusetts, to experience the amazing coaching and learning philosophies that the Shand family has taught to thousands of children for over 30 years. At WSC a safe and positive learning style with experienced coaches allows all campers to improve at their desired rate. Coaches at WSC promote self-esteem, fair play and teamwork, in order to obtain common goals both on and off the playing field.
At WSC campers enjoy a 4:1 camper to coach ratio at all times. Campers have the benefit of learning not only from the coaches, but from children who hail from over 86 different countries around the world. By exposing your child to the many different cultures and languages that are present at WSC, you will be amazed at the level of appreciation and respect that your child will obtain in the short amount of time that he/she attends.
Each camper has the opportunity to choose what sport they would like to participate in, each period of the day.
