Aspiring Stars Learn More In Vogelsinger Soccer Academy at UNC

In the July 27, 2004 issue of The Greeley Tribune, Matt Schuman writes about 6 young player's experience at Vogelsinger Soccer Academy at the University of Northern Colorado campus. Matt writes:

"Someday, members of the Greeley Bootlegger 13-and-under boys blue soccer team would like nothing better than to be able to bend it like English soccer star David Beckham.

However, this group of 12-year-old soccer players realizes it has a lot to learn about the game before it can play at the same level as the soccer sensation.

And who better to learn from than a man who played with Beckham himself.

That is the opportunity this six-pack of players had last week as they participated in the Vogelsinger Soccer Academy July 18-24 on the University of Northern Colorado campus.

This unique soccer camp for children ages 8-18 provides three sessions a day on the field that teaches players individual and tactical training, position play, team play and a combination of pre-season preparation and team play.

The camp is taught by an international field of coaches who have a variety of professional playing and coaching experiences.

One of those coaches is Jay Bigwood, a former player for Chelsea Football Club in the English Premiere League. When Bigwood was growing up in London, he played youth soccer against Beckham and was a teammate of his on a countywide select team.

However, a severe knee injury cut Bigwood's professional career short. So after a short stint as a journalist, Bigwood decided to get into coaching youth soccer.

He started with the Vogelsinger Soccer Academy 10 years ago after growing up as a student in the program, which his dad, John Bigwood, helped coach."
