Nike Five-Star Cross Country Camp hits the speaker jackpot for the summer of 2008.
The Five-Star Cross Country Camp is pleased to announce it’s prominent line-up of guest speakers at its sharp new location, Iroquois Springs Camp, just off Route 17 east of Monticello, NY.
Joe Newton, renowned cross country coach at York High School in Elmhurst, IL, leads off by speaking opening night, Sunday, Aug 10. Newton, who has won 26 Illinois cross country titles in a state that awards only one each year, is one of the two best known coaches in all of high school sports.
Bryan Kovalsky will be at the podium Monday night. The long-time Five-Star camper and counselor was Ivy League 10,000-meter champion while running at University of Pennsylvania. He used a fifth year of eligibility running for distance power, Iona College.
Kristi Rieger is coming from Sioux Falls, SD, to tell the campers Tuesday night how her Roosevelt High School girls have qualified twice for the Nike Team Nationals the first four years of the new cross country meet.
Dr. Matt Moran holds forth on Wednesday night. In three years, he's guided State University of New York at Cortland's men to fourth and third place finishes in the Division III BCAA cross country championships and as interim head track coach his men took second at outdoor NCAAs in 2007. Moran, who holds a doctorate in Kinesiolgy, competed successfully at both University of Houston and the College of William & Mary.
Dick Beardsley, runner-up by two seconds to Alberto Salazar in the 1982 Boston Marathon in one of the historic even's most historic finishes, returns to regale the group with stories and to educate the group about the evils of drugs on Thursday and Friday night. He brings a perfect end to a perfect week of speakers.
