Getting to Know: Cindy Fisher, Head Coach University of San Diego

Cindy Fisher Gtk

Cindy Fisher has been at the helm of the University of San Diego Women's Basketball Team since 2005. In her 10th year as the Torero's Head Coach, Fisher led USD to its fourth consecutive 20-win season, finishing second in the WCC and its fourth consecutive trip to the WNIT. Coach Fisher and the USD staff will direct the Nike Girls Basketball Camp at the University of San Diego for their fourth summer this June.

How long have you been coaching basketball/directing Nike Basketball Camps?

I have been a basketball coach at the collegiate level since 1998 when I started my career as an assistant coach at Mesa Community College! My first head coaching job was with the University of Wyoming, but my favorite coaching job is and always will be right here at University of San Diego! I have been putting on camps my entire career and have recently been directing Nike Basketball Camps for the past three years!

What made you get into coaching?

My love for the game drew me to become a basketball coach! In my life, as far back as I can remember, I was always on the basketball court. I learned about the game of basketball at every chance I could take. I emulated everything I saw other players and coaches doing while growing up and it eventually led to me to a career in coaching!

What is your favorite camp drill and why?

My favorite drill is the Mass Defensive Drill! It’s the drill where the coach points and dictates where players slide defensively. In addition, coaches can throw in charges, loose balls and quick feet to make the drill even more fun! I love this drill beciase it incorporates the whole team, it’s loud and exciting and brings a lot of energy to gym!

What is the key to an incredible camp experience for you?

I believe a great camp consists of players creating relationships with one another and the coaching staff! Basketball is all about making lifelong relationships. If a player can leave camp with a new friend and and improve their game at the same time, than that is success to me! And of course the safety of all the campers is important as well!

Your perfect camper on Day #1 arrives with what qualities?

My perfect camper arrives on time, with a smile on her face and ready to listen! Great players are coachable and have the ability to listen to their coaches and their teammates!

Which college or pro Coach do you admire and why?

The coach I admire most is Greg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs. Popovich is a great teacher of the game and emphasizes having players who are great teammates and have great character both on and off the court!

What is your “go-to” Nike gear?

I always wear my Nike frees in the best color… Torero Blue!
