Getting to Know: Terri Bamford, La Jolla Country Day School
Terri Bamford is one of the most prominent high school basketball coaches in the nation. Terri has been the Head Coach at La Jolla Country Day School since 1997 and has been directing Nike Basketball Camps for 17 years. Bamford’s experience, passion, and dedication to the game are what makes her a standout coach.
How long have you been coaching basketball/directing Nike Basketball Camps?
This will be my 17th year directing the Nike Basketball Camp at La Jolla Country Day. I love coaching camp because it gives me an opportunity to meet new campers and watch the improvement of the returning campers. Our camp staff is amazing and 80% of our staff is former campers who return from the collegiate level or Professional level. Over the past 17 years we have built an amazing basketball family. Basketball is my passion and I love teaching. I feel so blessed that I have the opportunity to be working in the field of my passion and to work with so many amazing individuals!
What is your favorite camp drill and why?
Hot Shot- This is a timed shooting drill. It’s great to see kids who can shoot the ball at a high percentage as well as have the opportunity to identify the kids that need extra help in developing a consistent jump shot.
What is the key to an incredible camp experience for you?
The key for me is to provide a fun, competitive, positive, learning environment where campers can enjoy improving their basketball skills.
Your perfect camper on Day #1 arrives with what qualities?
Campers are required to bring the following 2 qualities when arriving to camp: A Positive Attitude and Maximum Effort!
Which college or pro Coach do you admire and why?
One of the coaches that I really admire is Tara Vanderveer… it is her ability to build and maintain a winning culture of excellence at such a strong academic institution.
What’s in your bag?
My Bag has a Legal pad of paper, a pen and two bottles of water. Most coaches use a dry erase board but I prefer paper and pen when coaching.
