March 21, 2014. San Rafael, CA – US Sports Camps is pleased to announce a new camp partnership with Cal Rowing.  “Pairing with a D-1 crew powerhouse such as Cal, will provide a first-class experience for young rowers of all abilities wishing to advance their skills,” says Justin Hoeveler, Vice President of US Sports Camps.  The four-day sessions, running in June-July 2014, will cover technique, conditioning, strength training, video analysis, racing tactics, and the college recruitment process. Camp is open to rowers interested in trying the sport of rowing or those that have previous experience, looking to improve after their novice year.

The women’s camp will hold three sessions – first two will focus on technique and general conditioning. These sessions are a great opportunity for aspiring athletes interested in trying a new sport, or experienced rowers eager to advance skills and compete. The third session will have a racing focus. This session will be strenuous, and will involve erg testing, seat racing, race strategy and more. This is designed to focus on competitive skills and supplement basic technical knowledge. “It’s perfect for the camper who wants a taste of a top-tier program, but hasn’t necessarily had tons of experience,” says Sarah Pudicombe, Director of the Women’s camp. The Cal Women’s coaches have led the California Golden Bears to 6 consecutive Pac-12 Team titles, 6 consecutive top-3 team finishes in the country at NCAA's, as well as the 2013 I Eight National Champions.

Similarly to the Women’s program, the Cal Men’s program has raked in a few outstanding accolades as well. The Cal Men’s coaches have led the California Golden Bears to 5 consecutive top-3 finishes at the IRA national championships, 3 top-2 finishes at the Pac-10 championships, yet to mention their numerous Olympic accomplishments, for both coaches and athletes. The men’s camp will also hold three sessions – first session will be a technique camp, designed for rowers of all skill and experience levels and will cover all facets of the sport. The second session covers elite racing, giving athletes a sense of what it is like to train and race at an elite Division I university, while focusing on race pace strategy and technical refinement. This specialized camp is designed for advanced rowers with a suggested two seasons of racing experience. The third session is based around high performance, which is geared towards experienced rowers with one racing season completed, who would like to get a feel for what it is like to row at an elite Division I university. This camp is specifically designed to cover the breadth of the sport of rowing. "Cal Rowing Camps have been an excellent opportunity for rowers to improve their skills, see the university, and better understand how to get to the next level. Each camp presents a unique opportunity for athletes to learn from top tier coaches and advance their rowing ability through teamwork. The summer offers a variety of chances for young rowers to improve their rowing with a structure that has a proven track record," adds Scott Frandsen, Assistant Coach for the Men’s Cal Crew team.

Both men’s and women’s sessions will run between June 23rd and July 31st, at the historic T. Gary Rogers Rowing Center - the Bears home since 1924 and steeped in over 75 years of tradition. For more information on the two camps, or if you would like to register, please click here.
