(PR WEB) April 19, 2016 - US Sports Camps, the official camp operators of Nike Sports Camps, recently donated Nike soccer balls and other product to children in Jinja, Uganda.

In an effort to support the work of a San Francisco native, Father Christopher La Rocca, OCD, US Sports Camps donated Nike soccer balls and product for children living in trying conditions in Uganda, Africa.

Father Christopher is in charge of a seminary in Jinja, Uganda. After moving to Jinja, Father Christopher quickly realized the majority of the population were starving and homeless and the average age of the people in his community was 15. He witnessed young children without parents, without food, and without a roof over their heads. For those lucky enough to find work, the average earning was about two dollars a day. Most people have no fresh water to drink and contract typhoid fever by drinking the water that is available out of desperation.

One of the positive things Father Christopher noticed was the community's love of soccer. He learned that hundreds of children, both boys and girls, play soccer in Jinja on various teams in various leagues. Soccer is something that helps provide these people with joy and distraction from their dire circumstances. However, children in Jinja do not play with normal soccer balls, but rather with balls they craft out of banana skins, which are smaller than a normal soccer ball and harder to the touch. A little over a year ago, Father Christopher arranged for some synthetic soccer balls to be delivered and the children loved them. In fact, they loved them so much that most of the balls are completely worn out now, which is why US Sports Camps has stepped up to send more.

When US Sports Camps CEO, Charlie Hoeveler, heard Father Christopher's story and about the horrific circumstances in Jinja, he immediately wanted to help. "It's heartbreaking to think about children living in such awful conditions," says Hoeveler. "The reason I love being in the sports industry is because of that great joy it brings to the participants. We hope that in sending these children new soccer balls and Nike gear we can help brighten their lives and create more opportunities for them to play soccer and reap the benefits of the joy it provides."
