Getting to Know: Miha Lisac, Head Women’s Coach at West Virginia University

With extensive experience in the tennis arena as a player and coach at the collegiate level, Miha Lisac was named West Virginia University’s sixth women’s tennis head coach in August of 2013.  Lisac is a former student-athlete and men’s assistant coach at Georgia State, who finished his sixth season as head coach of the women’s tennis program at his alma mater following the 2012-13 season.  Lisac was born and raised in Velenje in the European nation of Slovenia.  A 2005 graduate of Georgia State, Lisac lettered four years for the Panthers and was a two-time All-Atlantic Sun Conference selection and a four-time recipient of conference academic honors.

How many years have you been directing camp?
This is the second year we are hosting, and I am directing, the camp at WVU. We had a great session last year with many campers that worked well and got a chance to learn and make progress on the tennis courts, as well as meet some of their peers on the tennis courts.

Favorite camp drill?
Favorite camp drills would have to be King of the court for older participants and the game of Jail for the youngest participants. I like competitive and fast paced drills for campers.

Why did you get in to coaching?
I went in to college coaching as an assistant coach, while I was completing my master’s degree in Sport Management. Once I started coaching, I quickly realized that I enjoyed being on the court as a coach and loved everything about college coaching.

What's in your bag?
Haha … that is a good question since there is not much in my bag anymore ... compared to my playing days. In my tennis bag I would always keep a change of clothes, racket, tennis shoes, water, snacks, and coaching notes. Other items in the bag would include a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, as well as a towel. The last and maybe most important item I always keep with me is a vibra damper with a smiley face on it … it reminds me not to take myself seriously all the time.

What can you be heard saying at camp?
Most of the staff and campers would probably tell you that you would probably hear me talk about hard work and enjoying your time on the court more than anything else.

If you could “borrow” one stroke from a current pro player, who would it be and why?
I wouldn’t mind borrowing Wawrinka’s backhand; it is a beautiful and an incredibly effective stroke.

Go to Nike product?
Nike running shoes. I have never been able to be without Nike running shoes. They fit extremely well, are light, and very comfortable.
