In its second year the Pacific Cross Country High Altitude camp offers a great opportunity for the up and coming distance runner to get a glimpse at what it means to be a collegiate runner.
Pacific’s Nike High Altitude Camp is a one of a kind camp. It not only gives campers summer altitude training but a glimpse of current philosophies of training and racing at the collegiate level. Our camp will give the camper individual attention and help them on their way of accomplishing their goals for the upcoming cross country season. Each day campers will participate in a learning session which includes an exercise physiology lesson. This lesson contains information on the 3 energy systems and how they are used when training and racing. Campers will also be able to talk to NCAA Div 1 athletes and ask questions about the college experience. Along with the daily running and learning schedules campers will enjoy friendly competition between groups, such as ultimate frisbee, dodgeball and much more. Campers will learn what it means to be a teammate and the importance of a distance team.
Highlights Include
- Nike Running Camp T-shirt
- Camp completion certificate
- Education in nutrition and exercise physiology
- Access to miles of high altitude trails
- Fun and entertaining extra activities
- Top-notch college coaching
This year, campers and staff will be staying at the Bear Valley Lodge. Plenty of trails and an elevation at 7,800' make a perfect environment for some great running. For recreational time there is a pool and ping pong tables, swimming pool, basketball courts, and lake. Bear Valley is on Highway 4 approximately 28 miles east of Arnold, California. After exiting Hwy 4 onto Bear Valley Road, BaseCamp is the second building on the left after the first stop sign.

Nike running camps does a very good job at getting to know each runner and giving them individual help on their running form to help each person to become a better runner. Something that I really liked about the camp was that on some runs there was an option of how long of a run we could do, and there were different groups depending on how fast of a runner we were.
My son had an excellent experience and gained good insight into possibly being a collegiate runner! Coach Jones and his support staff were dialed into the kids and their needs. My son's only complaint is that the camp was way too short!
Kirkwood XC camp was incredible. The staff individualized the instruction but focused on team building at the same time. Can't wait for next year!
Great experience
Easy drive, great location, and my son really enjoyed himself. Running in high altitude was a great experience for him. We will try to get more kids to go next year.
Stronger passion for running
Nike Running Camp at Kirkwood Resort has created a stronger passion in me for running and many new tactics to better my performance, along with tips for my entire team. Connecting with other motivated runners, as well as getting one on one instruction was exactly what I needed. I learned much about going further in my sport than high school and I required a tolerance to high altitude trail running that felt more amazing than I can describe! I definitely didn't want to leave and I'm still in contact with some of the kids that I met from across the US. Most importantly, I had a blast and I know that everyone else did too, no matter what their experience was.
Push your limits
Kirkwood high altitude XC camp will take you to beautiful ridges, push you to your limits while teaching you about the effect of altitude, and send you home at the end of the week with sore legs and personal info about your own running stride.
Individualized attention
EVERYTHING! I had enough time to really connect with the coach AND other campers in a great way, partially because it was a smaller scale camp which I loved. I got a lot of one on one instruction and exciting new ideas for my upcoming XC season. I can't wait to share all the stuff I learned with my coach. The camp just really gave me a jump start and a fresh batch of motivation for this year. I couldn't be happier that I participated in the camp; it was definitely a highlight to my summer. Oh, and the high altitude aspect was extremely beneficial!
Fixed form
The breakout talks were really personal to the runners. For example, one day the coaches watched you run and told each kid specifically what to change about their form. The shoe talk was also interesting and specific to each kid. The binding activities at night like capture the flag was a great way to dome together as a camp.
