2013 New England Region and National Coaching Staff of the Year
Tufts University softball head coach Cheryl Milligan and her staff were named as both the New England Region and National Coaching Staff of the Year at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) convention.
Coach Milligan, assistant coach Melissa Myers and assistant coach Jodie Moreau guided the Jumbos to the 2013 NCAA Division III Softball Championship and were honored at the convention during a brunch on Saturday (Dec. 7).
Tufts also won its fourth NCAA Regional title in 2013 with a 4-0 record at Babson College.
Coach Milligan's squad also swept through the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) championship to capture their eighth league title. Milligan was named NESCAC Coach of the Year for the second year in a row and for the sixth time of her career.Meet your coaching staff
The Tufts University Softball program is one of the best in New England under the direction of head coach Cheryl Milligan, now in her ninth season with the Jumbos. A 1995 Tufts graduate, Milligan has guided the Jumbos to three New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) titles and three NCAA Tournament berths. Her teams have a combined record of 221-98 for an excellent .693 winning percentage.
Tufts enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in NCAA Division III history in 2009. Their 44-3 final record is the eighth-best winning percentage (.936) since official NCAA softball records began with the 1982 season. The Jumbos won their third straight NESCAC title and captured the program's second NCAA New England Region crown that season. They finished fourth in the nation at the NCAA Championship in Montclair, New Jersey, and were ranked fourth in the final National Fast-pitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll.
In 2009, Milligan was voted by her peers as the conference's Coach of the Year for the third straight year and for the fourth time in five years. Among the players Milligan recruited to the program, right fielder Maya Ripecky and designated player Lena Cantone were selected NFCA All-Americans, Lauren Gelmetti was voted NESCAC Pitcher of the Year, and center fielder Laura Chapman was selected NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year for 2009. Twelve individual and 11 team single-season records were tied or broken. In addition to being voted the conference's coach of the year, Milligan was also awarded New England Coach of the Year from the ECAC for 2009.
Six Jumbos have earned All-American honors during Milligan's tenure. She has also coached six NESCAC Players of the Year. Her 2005 Tufts team led the nation in home runs per game with a 1.20 average, currently the 13th-best single-season mark NCAA Div. III history.
A four-year starter at shortstop and an assistant coach for six years at Tufts, Milligan was promoted to head coach of the Jumbos in July 2003. She played every inning of the 120 games during her Tufts softball career. Her .377 career batting average is fifth all-time, and she is fifth on the team’s career runs scored list with 119. Milligan was a member of the class that vaulted the softball program into annual post-season contention. The 1995 team hosted and won the ECAC North Championship, finishing 31 wins.
