Paul Flinchbaugh was named the first head men's and women's swimming and diving coach in Berry College history in October, 2008. Read Full BioFlinchbaugh was charged with the task of building the Vikings' and Lady Vikings' swimming and diving programs from the ground up. The teams' first season came in the 2009-10 academic year.
"I am very excited to be here with such an opportunity," Flinchbaugh said when he was hired. "Starting a new program like this there are no limits to where we can go. I plan to hit the ground running and the biggest priority is to let people know that we are here and what a unique opportunity exists here with swimming at Berry."
Flinchbaugh joined the Berry staff after many years working in aquatics. Most recently, he served as the aquatics coordinator for the Albany, Ga. YMCA. There he managed two pools, including a year-round facility, with the other being a seasonal-use, 50-meter pool and coached the Stingrays swim team. Prior to that, Flinchbaugh served for a year as the aquatics facility director for the City of Panama City Beach, Fla., where he oversaw the completion of construction on a new aquatics facility and the first year of operation.
In addition to his work as an aquatics director, Flinchbaugh has an extensive coaching background. His most recent collegiate coaching efforts were at Darton College. There he took the Albany, Ga.-based junior college from having one swimmer for both the men's and women's program, to a top-five ranking in the NJCAA in both 2004 and 2005. He coached a national championship-winning 400 medley relay team and helped a total of 13 swimmers earn CSCAA All-American honors, along with nine All-American relays.
Flinchbaugh also spent nine years coaching at both the NCAA Division III level and the high school level. He served as the diving coach for Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. from 1993-2003. While serving as the main diving coach Hamilton, Flinchbaugh also coached the New Hartford High School boy's and girl's swim teams, and operated a successful United States Diving club team.
"I think Berry is an extremely attractive place," said Flinchbaugh. "It has an excellent academic reputation that is enhanced with the new athletic opportunities. Especially with the new facilities in The Cage."
Flinchbaugh attended the State University of New York at Cortland. There he earned both a bachelor's and master's degree of science in education, physical education. He has taught classes at Darton College, as well as other public schools.
