A Holistic Approach To Competitive Swimming

In order for a swimmer to realize their full swimming potential they must be mentally, technically and physically fit. Contrary to popular belief, physical fitness by itself is not enough. A swimmer must also possess a high degree of mental and technical fitness.

The Chicago Peak Performance Swim Camp takes place at the Lake Forest Academy. We pride ourselves in offering a balance between physical, technical and mental training. Referring to the chart below Peak 1 offers a 75/25 blend of physical and technical conditioning while Peak 2 offers a 50/50 blend of physical and technical conditioning. In addition, this camp offers an in-depth mental conditioning curriculum designed to enhance a swimmer's self-esteem, develop focus skills and improve the ability to perform in stressful situations.

Camp Director

Nick Baker

Nick Baker cofounded the original Peak Performance Swim Camp in 1996. In 2005 he branched out on his own and founded the present-day version. His vision was to create a holistic camp with a focus on developing the whole swimmer from a mental, technical, and physical perspective.

Nick Baker has been involved in competitive swimming since 1961. He swam competitively for 11 years (and qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 200M Breaststroke), coached club swimming for 21 years, and has exclusively run swim camps for the past 18 years. He started his coaching career in Canada in 1972, and moved to the United States in 1993 to run a competitive swim camp at the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

In the year prior to moving to the United States, one of Nick' swimmers, Lisa Flood, qualified for the 1992 Canadian Olympic Team in the 100 BR placing fourteenth overall. Nick attended the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games as Lisa's personal coach. Lisa also won the 200 BR at NCAA Division 1 Championships, medalled at the Pan American Games, and competed in her second Olympics in 1996 placing twelfth overall in the 100 BR.

In 1995, Nick published a motivational book for competitive swimmers entitled 101 Winning Ways. The material for the book came from observing the "winning ways" of successful swimmers.

Since the camp's inception, Nick has traveled throughout the U.S. and abroad, conducting his holistic swim camps. Past international locations include: Antigua, Aruba, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, China, Curacao, England, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Singapore, Spain, Turkey, and Venezuela. Past U.S. locations include: Alabama, Alaska, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Peak Performance Swim Camp currently offers more than two dozen swim camps and clinics annually including clinics for triathletes and master swimmers. More than 800 swimmers participated in 2011. Private coaching as well as start, stroke, and turn video analysis are also available throughout the year.

In 2007, Nick formed a dynamic partnership with Nike-United States Sports Camps (USSC). USSC is the official and exclusive operator of US Sports/Nike Camps, America's largest sports camp network and official operator of Nike Sports Camps worldwide.

Over the last thirty-nine years, Nick has coached swimmers of all ages and abilities, including Olympic Finalists, Olympic Trial Qualifiers, NCAA Champions, Senior National Champions, Junior National Champions, State Champions, National and Junior National Qualifiers, Zone Champions, and Junior Olympic Champions.

Nick has been a featured writer in Swimming World magazine and presented at numerous coaching clinics throughout the world. He also acts as a consultant to various swim teams including the Greenwich YMCA in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Learn more about June 9-13 Peak Performance Swim Camp

PEAK 1:

Open to swimmers ages 11-18 who train 5,000 yards/meters (or greater) per practice.

PEAK 1 is our most challenging camp. It is well suited for accomplished senior-level swimmers and elite-level age group swimmers. Participants must be mentally, technically, and physically prepared to endure the rigors of 4.5 hours of in-water training per day plus 1 hour of dry-land training per day. Approximately 75% of the total pool time is dedicated to physical conditioning; however, all sets include significant mental and technical expectations.

Rather than offer a series of generic training sets, each practice is created to reflect the group's needs and talent level. In addition, we do not condone garbage yardage or mindless meters. Each lap of practice must have purpose!

All-together PEAK 1 includes: 9 challenging in-water training sessions, 4 dry-land training sessions, 2 yoga sessions, and 2-3 mental conditioning sessions.
Note: Peak 1 is not well suited for swimmers with swimming-related injuries.

PEAK 2:

Open to swimmers ages 8-18 who train between 3,000 to 5,000 yards/meters per practice.

PEAK 2 offers a 50/50 blend of technical and physical conditioning and well suited for medium to elite-level age group swimmers who have qualified for top age group competition in their state/province. Participants must possess the maturity and discipline to handle 4 hours of in-water training per day plus 1 hour of dry-land training per day. In addition, they must exhibit a high degree of technical competency and physical fitness. Participants must be able to perform all four competitive strokes and turns and the three competitive starts (front, back, relay).

Rather than offer a series of generic training sets, each practice is created to reflect the group's needs and talent level. In addition, we do not condone garbage yardage or mindless meters. Each lap of practice must have purpose!

All-together PEAK 2 includes: 10 challenging in-water training sessions, 5 dry-land training sessions, 2 yoga sessions, and 2-3 mental conditioning sessions.

NICK!!!!
I did it! I made age group provincials in my 200 breast stroke! I have taken off 12 seconds in this since seeing you this summer in Connecticut. Your confidence in me helped my confidence in myself …a lot! Thank you so much (and all the other awesome coaches like Tim ). I can’t wait to come again soon….

Dear Nick & PEAK staff…THANK YOU for all that you have done for our daughter! The all important triangle philosophy has significantly impacted her both in and out of the pool! This past fall was a very rewarding season. She placed first in the 100 Breast at sectionals with a time of 1:06.27…then placed third in the 50 Free with a new school record and state qualifying time of 24.75…and also assisted all 3 relays in qualifying for States, thus qualifying in all 5 events. At States she swam the 100 Breast and captured the 8th place finish in the A Finals.

You and your staff’s ability to break the stroke into integral component parts that the swimmer can understand and then build them back up in correct format is fascinating to observe. This method of instruction is concrete and one that swimmers are able to immediately feel results. We have moved into our club season and look forward to working with PEAK in the future!

Coach Baker …
I am not sure that I can find adequate words to express our appreciation and gratitude to you and your team for the mental, technical, and physical training that you presented to our daughter. WE ARE THRILLED TO INFORM YOU THE SHE MADE Y NATIONALS IN HER 100 BR WITH THE EXACT QUALIFYING TIME OF 1:08.89! (She is also a math student so the exact time has always been required.)

Before her race she visualized you being on deck watching, she cleared her mind, stayed calm, and swam her best with sheer determination.
My husband and I will never forget that chilly morning in Orlando this past December, watching you give my daughter a private lesson. We knew then that she had never had this type of instruction before and that it was critical for her to reach her goals. I then brought her to your Westchester clinic and within 10 minutes in the pool with you, once again, I watched her breaststroke transformed – it has just been amazing to me.

After returning from Greensboro, we will take a minute and plan our summer. She has already been asking when she may work with you again as she would love to every week!!!
