Meet your coaching staff
Co-Director
DJ Gurule
D.J. Gurule is entering his seventh year as the head coach of the Gonzaga University women's tennis program. He has been directing Nike Tennis Camps for several years.
Read Full BioGurule has continued to improve the Zags both on and off the court as 11 Bulldogs have earned All-West Coast Conference accolades and six players have garnered WCC All-Academic honors in his five years. Gurule has had at least one player placed on a All-WCC team in each of his five seasons and had at least two players earn WCC All-Academic honors in each of the past three years. The past two seasons has also seen the Zags earn ITA All-Academic honors as a team including eight total players who were named ITA Scholar-Athletes.
Gurule has put together back-to-back impressive seasons with the Zags posting consecutive 10-win seasons and having multiple All-WCC selections each year. Last season the Bulldogs recorded 11 wins and had a program-best four players earn All-WCC honors, including the school's inaugural All-WCC doubles selection. Also in 2009 freshman Kristina Zauere out of Riga, Latvia, set the school-record for victories with 17 and became the Zags second All-WCC second-team selection. Zauere also paired up with Agalya Kokurina to earn All-WCC honorable mention accolades in doubles.
The 2008 season saw Gurule lead the Zags to a 10-win season and also produce the program's inaugural All-WCC second team selection in Kokurina. The Bulldogs' work in the classroom also earned them a spot on the International Tennis Association All-Academic team.
Gurule had at least one All-WCC selection in each of his first three seasons at GU from 2005-07, including two players who earned conference accolades in 2007.
In October 2009, Gurule and Gonzaga's head men's tennis coach Peter MacDonald were appointed Co-Directors of the Spokane Racquet Club, the site of both the men's and women's teams home matches.
Gurule joined the Bulldogs athletic staff after working one year as a club professional at Eagle Crest Resort in Redmond, Ore. Gurule also worked for four years as the head tennis professional at Broken Top in Bend, Ore., and served three seasons as the women's tennis coach at Mountain View High in Bend.
Gurule played collegiate tennis at Pacific Lutheran University earning four varsity letters for the Lutes. Gurule and his wife, Katie, reside in Spokane with their daughter, Eliana (2008).
Co-Director
Peter MacDonald
Peter MacDonald enters his seventhseason as the head men's tennis coach at Gonzaga University in 2010-11. He has been directing Nike Tennis Camps for several years.
Read Full BioUnder MacDonald's guidance, the Bulldogs have consistently improved both on the court and in the classroom. In 2010, MacDonald led the Zags to another 10-win season, marking the second time the Zags have reached that 10-win plateau in the past three years. During MacDonald's tenure seven Bulldogs have garnered All-WCC accolades and five others have received West Coast Conference All-Academic honors.
In 2009, MacDonald had a pair of freshmen each finish the season with double-digit wins in singles play for the first time in his tenure at Gonzaga. Gonzaga closed out the season with a win over Santa Clara University on the final day of the WCC Championships. MacDonald continues to produce off the court as well, as two players earned WCC All-Academic honors last season, marking the third consecutive year at least one Zag has received the accolade.
In his first two seasons at Gonzaga, MacDonald increased the team's win total each year before producing an 11-win season in 2007. The 11 victories marked the most wins for the program since it posted 13 wins in 1999. Also in 2007, the Bulldogs were named an ITA All-Academic team, were recipients of the NCAA Public Recognition Award and had six student-athletes named ITA Scholar-Athletes. All three accolades marked program firsts. In 2008, the Bulldogs were named to the ITA All-Academic team for the second consecutive season as MacDonald continued to add to the list of firsts for the Gonzaga men's tennis program. That season a program-best four players earned All-West Coast Conference honors as well as recording the Zags first win at the WCC Championships since 2000.
In October 2009 MacDonald and Gonzaga's head women's tennis coach D.J. Gurule were appointed Co-Directors of the Spokane Racquet Club, the site of both the men's and women's home matches.
MacDonald joined the Gonzaga athletic department after four years as a private coach in Portland, Ore. MacDonald went on to develop a high performance junior program while also organizing and coordinating high-performance clinics for the Pacific Northwest's top tennis players. Through his work as a private instructor, MacDonald has helped coach several players to victory at several national open tournaments in both singles and doubles play. Prior to his work as a private instructor he was a head tennis professional in Gresham, Ore. MacDonald also served as the assistant women's tennis coach at the University of Portland from 1996-98. While at Portland he helped with the technical and strategic development of the players.
MacDonald is a 1996 graduate of the University of Portland, earning his bachelors of science degree in business management.
Program
This year we are offering one week of day camp (9am-4pm) for campers ages 6-18. All skills levels are welcome. Lunch is provided for all Day & Half Day campers.
Upon arrival, all participants are evaluated by the staff so that their own instructional needs can be addressed throughout the week.
10 and Under Tennis:
In addition, we offer a “10 and Under Tennis” program, featuring the USTA’s successful new teaching format. This is an exciting new way kids 10 and under are learning to play tennis as well as compete. The courts are smaller and balls are low-compression so they are easier to hit, allowing kids to get to the ball and develop optimal swing patterns. It all makes it easy and fun for them to hit, play and score from the start, while developing skills that will last a lifetime. Please note: This program is optional and younger campers may opt to play regular tennis on the full courts. For more information on “10 and Under Tennis” programs nationwide, Click Here to check out the USTA website.
Dartfish video analysis will be used during the camp to analyze and improve your strokes. See your strokes compared to a top playing professional! Your Dartfish Mediabook will be posted to a private player locker on Dartfish.tv and reviewed with you by the staff at camp (click here for an example). You will receive a printout showing key positions with corrective comments. After camp, these Dartfish interactive analyses are available for purchase. For $19.95, the package includes:
- Stroke Analysis: your Dartfish Mediabook contains videos of your strokes, plus side-by-side comparison with a pro, along with comments.
- Pro Stroke Library: one month access to Pro Stroke Library, featuring hundreds of strokes in both real and high speed.
- Camp highlights video*: This video of camp activities and friends all set to music will be something everyone will want to have and keep forever. (*Only offered at participating locations.)

Not Long Enough!
I enjoyed the camp and the staff. Wish it could be a little longer.

Thankful parents!
DJ and Peter were great with all the kids. They worked with each kid at different times to help develop their individual game. They kept the energy up and made it fun to the kids to learn and play tennis, but they also turned up the intensity with some of the advanced kids to help push them. We really enjoyed our time at this camp and are thankful that DJ and Peter were the instructors.
