3 Keys to an Explosive First Step

Plt Logo V2

The Explosive First Step is one of the best ways around defensive pressure. This step gives you an advantage over the defender because he/she has to react to your move – they don’t know what you’re thinking or your movements.

Check out Nike Camp Director Joel Green’s tips from his Pro Level Training video.

  1. Triple Threat Stance: get low, glute out, legs shoulder width apart standing on the balls of your feet, and arms close to your sides. Staying on the balls of your feet will help for a faster, stronger push off.

  2. Push off from the balls of your feet: make sure to emphasize and contract your glute muscles. These muscles are essential for the “explosive” movement.

  3. Attack the defender’s front foot: This puts the defender in a position in which he/she is out of balance and needs to recover, giving you space and time to get to the hoop.
