Coaches Corner - Hitting on the Run

Presented by: Geoff Young, Head Men's Tennis Coach and Director of the Nike Tennis Camp at University of Minnesota

University of Minnesota head men's coach Geoff Young cautions "going for the winner" when hitting a ball on the run.

Coach Young explains, "Often times when we are on the run tracking down a ball in the corner, we are tempted to try and hit the winner down the line. Recognizing that it's possible to make this shot, realistically it is not playing percentage tennis."

Coach Young stresses the importance of playing a smarter or higher percentage shot.  "The right play here is to go back crosscourt or down the middle in an attempt to neutralize the point, patiently waiting for your next opportunity to attack.  Next time you are on the run, try to notice this pattern and watch the high percentage shot pay off!"

Coming off five straight appearances in the NCAA tournament, Head Men's Coach Geoff Young has turned Minnesota into one of the premier teams in the Big Ten conference. The Gophers are only one of four Big Ten schools (Illinois, Michigan and Ohio State), who have played in the NCAA tournament four straight years.

To get more tips and instruction from Coach Young, check out the Nike Tennis Camps at University of Minnesota.   With three weeks of Overnight and Day (8:45am-5:00pm) camp for boys and girls ages 9-18 of all skill levels, there is a camp option for everyone!  There is a special tournament training component during weeks 2&3, and the camp also offers a "10 and Under Tennis" program for those kids who are just learning the game (ages 9-10).

Nike Tennis Camps offer junior and adult overnight and day camps at 75 locations nationwide. The camps provide first-rate instruction, match play, diversified social activities, exposure to life in a university setting – and the chance to build lasting friendships.  Our goal is to give players the opportunity to hit thousands of balls, improve their technique, and be challenged by some of the best players in their peer group.
