Tennis Tip: Play to Win

Coaches Corner

Although winning isn't the only thing that matters in sports, it sure does feel good to beat your opponent! In the tennis tip below, Nick Crowell, Head Men's Tennis Coach at University of Oklahoma and Director of the Nike Tennis Camp at University of Oklahoma offers advice on how to play your critical points in your style in order to improve your winning results.

"Winning tennis matches at all levels always comes down to just a few key points in the match. Especially with the new 'no ad' scoring format in collegiate tennis, each point now carries more weight. How you play those points can and will determine the outcome of the match.

I am a big proponent of always playing to Win. I know it sounds a bit cliche, but it is true. In those moments during a match when you have the opportunity to snatch victory from your opponent, it's always best to play your game style and the point you want to play.

For example, if you like to serve big, then go for your serve. If you like to come to the net, then look for that opportunity to get in. Play your beat pattern and your style when the match is on the line. I always say to our guys. It's better to be the one applying the pressure than the one sitting back waiting for your opponent to miss. Good players will never give it to you! You have to reach up and take it!!

Remember when it's time to win, play your game, go for your shots and take the match!"
