Tennis Tip: The I-Formation Doubles Strategy

In doubles, it's important to vary your strategy and execute smart, well thought out tactics to help elevate your level of play. In this tennis video tip, Seminole High Performance Nike Tennis Camp director, Dwayne Hultquist, demonstrates "The I-Formation" doubles tactic.

The I-Formation is one of the most common serving doubles tactics. The server completes the serve near the center point of the baseline. Their partner is positioned at the midpoint of the center service line in a crouching posture, to avoid obstructing the server's view. Right after the ball passes over the server’s partner, he/she should anticipate the return and cut diagonally towards the ball. At this time, the server should stand on the middle part of the court and quickly run towards the open court. This I formation tactic works by confusing the receiver’s team and can throw them out of their momentum if they do well with returning serves.

Entering his 20th season at the helm of the Florida State men’s tennis program, Hultquist has put himself atop the Florida State record books and the Seminoles consistently in the national spotlight. Under Hultquist’s leadership, Florida State men’s tennis has emerged as one of the top programs in the Atlantic Coast Conference and the country. In 19 seasons under Hultquist, FSU has had three ACC Player of the Year recipients, six All-American honors, the ITA Most Improved Player and two national ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award winners.
