How to Give Your Volleyball Serve a Spin

Serving Tips By Cheneta Robinson

Elite volleyball players spend a lot of time practicing their serve. It is important to make sure you have mastered the fundamental techniques of serving before you can advance to a serve that spins with power. The steps below below are taught at our volleyball camps to take every athletes game to the next level:

1. Stand with your feet apart, one in front of the other, with your non-dominant foot forward.

2. Look up and imagine where you want the ball to go.

3. Throw the ball slightly behind your hitting shoulder. (key step!)

4. Bend your back and swing your arm backward.

5. Hit the ball with your arm fully stretched out, and try to roll your hand over the top of the ball.

6. Follow through the serve, adding force to the ball.

DI Associate Head Coach at University of California, Berkeley, Jennifer Dorr, teaches her players to start at a place on the court where they can serve successfully with proper technique. "We start all our servers on the 10 foot line. Next, toss, step, and see your hand strike the ball." Join Coach Dorr at Cal Volleyball Camp or another location to improve your technique!
