Nike Junior Golf Camps
Wichita State Women's Golf Coach, Tom McCurdy, is excited to offer an overnight junior golf camp for advanced tournament players. This program is designed for the serious junior golfer looking to elevate their game in a competitive camp environment.
At Shocker Golf Camp, the atmosphere is competitive and the focus is placed squarely on improvement. All aspects of golf, both mental and physical, are addressed. Players also participate in discussions including topics such as proper practice routines, tournament preparation, and the road to college golf.
The overnight camp includes all golf instruction, course play, meals, housing, and evening activities. Campers are housed in the dorms on campus and eat meals in the dining halls each day. Following dinner each night, campers participate in evening activities that can include campus tours, movies, and other sports activities.
Local residents have the option of participating in the day camp which runs from 9:00am - 5:00pm. This option includes all golf instruction, lunch, and course play. Day campers are dropped off and picked up at the course each day. Details on the first and last days of camp will be included in the registration packet.

Camp Director Tom McCurdy
Tom McCurdy serves as the head women's golf coach at Wichita State University, where he has completely changed the outlook of the program and brought it to new heights.View Tom McCurdy's Bio ⟩
The Shockers won their second-straight Missouri Valley Conference championship in 2014-15 by carding a 924 (301-311-312) to defeat second-place Missouri State by 13 strokes. Senior Alejandra Arellano became just the second golfer in school history to earn medalist honors and she was named all-conference along with sophomore Maria Alejandra Villalobos. WSU advanced to the NCAA Raleigh Regional and finished 16th.
Community service is also important in McCurdy’s coaching philosophy. His team amassed more than 150 hours of community service projects in Fall 2006, including assisting with “Toys 4 Tots” fundraising campaigns, “Red Ribbon Week” activities designed to educate children of the effects of drug abuse, and volunteering at local YMCA branches.
McCurdy’s collegiate coaching career began at his alma mater, Eastern Washington University, where he was an assistant from 1997-98. During that season, the Eagles had their most successful season in program history. He graduated from EWU in 1994 with a bachelor of arts degree in education.
He is married to the former Jennifer Anderson. They have two daughters, Kayden Lynn, born in July of 2006, and Jaye Elizabeth, born in October of 2007.
Coach Krista Peterson

In 2013-14, Peterson helped guide the Shockers to the first Missouri Valley Conference championship in school history. WSU carded a then-school record 54-hole score of 900 in the MVC championship and advanced to finish 22nd at the NCAA Stillwater Regional.
Peterson helped guide the Shockers to a second place MVC finish in her first season. She was a member of the Shockers golf team from 2005-2009 and lettered all four years.
Her stellar career included a third place finish at the 2008 Missouri Valley Conference tournament, which earned her all-conference honors. In 2009, she was named to the MVC all-Scholar-Athlete team.
The Wahoo, Neb., native graduated from Wichita State in June 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. She and her husband Victor reside in the Wichita area. They were married in the fall of 2010 and have a daughter, Wrenley and a son, Vander.
Coach Tony Blake
Tony Blake is an assistant coach at Wichita State. A member of the first team Jones coached at WSU, Blake brings significant experience both as an amateur and professional.View Tony Blake's Bio ⟩
In a relatively brief amount of time, Blake has had a significant impact, helping the Shockers to thirteen wins in 4 years. He has aided in the development of the 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 Missouri Valley Conference Golfers-of-the-Year, Rafael Becker, Hunter Sparks and Louis Cohen Boyer (2), while helping the Shockers to their fifth-sixth-seventh and eighth straight MVC titles as well as their, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd NCAA appearances. In his four seasons, WSU has produced 18 All-MVC performers, 3 MVC Newcomer of the Year awards, 4 MVC Championship medalists and 4 MVC Player of the Year awards.
At WSU, Blake is the recruiting coordinator while also coordinating practice schedules and overseeing player development.
Blake was a member of the Shocker golf team from 1994 to 1996 and was a two-year letterman after redshirting in 1994. Prior to Wichita State Blake was a member of the Butler County Community College golf team where he was the 1993 Region IV Champion.
Following his career after Wichita State Blake was a member of and participated in various mini-tours before regaining his amateur status in 2003. In 2004 Blake was crowned the Kansas State Mid-Amateur Champion.
The Wichita native graduated from Wichita State in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education- Sports Business. Blake and his wife Cara have two children, daughters Crandall and Carlin.
Shocker Advanced Junior Golf Camps are golf-intensive and create the ideal environment for the advanced player ready to take their game to the next level. Campers will hear first hand accounts of how members of our staff established themselves throughout various stages of their development. The importance of goal setting, time management, and hard work will be stressed as these are key elements to attaining success in golf and life. Check-In and Check-Out
Check-in occurs on Sunday, June 10th. Check-out is on Thursday, June 14th.
The Overnight fee includes all golf instruction, green fees, evening activities, housing and meals. The Day option includes all golf instruction, lunch, and course play. Day campers will be dropped off and picked up on campus each day.
Campers are supervised 24 hours a day. The staff lives in the dormitories with the campers and participates in evening activities. Drugs, alcohol and tobacco are strictly prohibited, and constitute, along with general misconduct, grounds for dismissal from camp without a refund.
Nike Junior Golf Camps does not provide transportation to and from airports, bus depots or train stations. The packet we send to registered campers in the spring offers suggestions on shuttle services for each specific camp.
A detailed camper registration packet containing check in location, health/release forms, emergency contact info, and a list of things to bring will be emailed to all registered campers in the Spring.
Sample Daily Schedule
- 7:30am Wake up and breakfast in dining hall
- 8:15am Campers depart for golf course
- 8:45am Warm up, stretching, demonstrations by staff
- 9:15am Small group instruction focusing on putting, chipping, pitching and full-swing. Emphasis on green reading, ball flight, proper practice routines
- 12:00pm Lunch
- 1:00pm Course play with focus on shot selection, course management, strategy, mental toughness (day campers depart following course play)
- 5:00pm Depart back to campus
- 6:00pm Dinner in dining hall
- 7:30pm Evening session - seminars, discussions on college golf, tournament preparation.
- 9:00pm Relax in dorms
- 10:00pm Lights out
Willowbend Golf Club
Located in northeast Wichita, Willowbend is the only Tom Weiskopf / Jay Morrish designed par 72 golf course in Kansas. It was opened in 1987 and is considered to be one of the finest golf courses and practice facilities in the state. The course has been host to numerous events including the Nike Tour, Futures Tour, U.S. Open and Senior U.S. Open qualifying.
