Nike Junior Golf Camps
Junior golfers of all ability levels are invited to our golf camp in Durham, NC held at Umstead Pines Golf and Swim Club. Campers enjoy top-notch instruction during the week under the direction of Camp Director, Dan Ruyle.
Full Day Camps 9:00am - 4:00pm
These camps are an excellent opportunity for junior golfers to improve their skills and their course management at the same time. The students in the full day camp enjoy three hours of instruction each morning. This instruction works on all facets of the game and prepares the junior player for the challenges of the course. After a lunch, which is included in the price of the camp, it’s off to play the course. During course play professionals teach strategy, etiquette and course management. The Full Day Camp is designed to create complete golfers and raise their game to the next level.
Half Day Camps 9:00am - 12:00pm
Half Day Camps run Monday through Thursday from 9:00am-Noon and include twelve hours of total instruction on the practice range and short game areas. For three hours each day, campers sharpen their skills with strong emphasis on the fundamentals—stance, grip, posture, full swing, rules & etiquette, etc.
- Small group instruction with low student/teacher ratio from experienced teaching professionals and coaches
- Three hours of daily practice with our experienced staff covering all facets of the game; putting, chipping/pitching, full-swing

Camp Director Dan Ruyle
Dan Ruyle is in his second year with the Tar Heels after 15 years as head men’s and women’s golf coach at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.View Dan Ruyle's Bio ⟩
Ruyle led the Pirates to eight NCAA Tournament appearances, including 2013-15 with the men. The women’s team finished third in the nation in 2008.
His teams won five conference championships and he was the conference coach of the year four times. He is past chair of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship Committee.
"Dan Ruyle brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our team," says head coach Andrew Sapp. "It's great for our players to have another set of eyes and an experienced golf mind to work with. One of Dan’s primary duties is to work with guys not currently in the lineup when the starting five is out of town at a tournament. This is very valuable for the depth of our squad as he can hold practice and qualifying for the half of the team who is not traveling on a given week, in an effort to get them ready for when they might make the starting lineup."
Camp Director Jon Whithaus
Jon is in his third season as the Assistant Women's Golf Coach at Duke University and also owns and operates Elite Level Golf. He has extensive experience working with players to help them to move from one level to the next level in their careers. He has worked in various capacities with amateur players and professional players, having experience with players who have competed on The European Tour, The LPGA Tour, The Symetra Tour, The Challenge Tour and The Sunshine Tour.View Jon Whithaus's Bio ⟩
Jon has had a very successful collegiate coaching career over the past two decades, previously as the Associate Head Men's Golf Coach at Duke University (4 years) and the Head Men's Golf Coach at Ohio Wesleyan University (12 years). His teams have reached the NCAA Championship in 16 of those years, highlighted by 9 top-10 finishes. His teams have won over 60 tournament titles throughout his career. Whithaus is the only coach in NCAA Division I to coach both a men's (2011) and women's (2016) program into the match play semifinals of the NCAA Championship.
Co-Director Vince Lazar
Vince Lazar enters his 19th season as DePauw’s head men’s and women’s golf coach and was named the National Golf Coaches Association’s Women's Division III Coach of the Year in 2002, 2004 and 2011.View Vince Lazar's Bio ⟩
Additionally, he is a seven-time regional coach of the year selection. He has led his teams to 14 appearances in the NCAA national championship, including 9 top-5 finishes. During his tenure,11 student-athletes have earned a total of 24 all-America honors and they've accumulated over 25 All-American Scholar accolades.
This program is designed for boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 18. Our staff is on hand to provide campers with top quality instruction each day. At Nike Junior Golf Camps we accommodate all skill levels; the junior player just discovering the game, the high school player trying to move up on the team, and the tournament level junior looking to improve his or her tournament results. A detailed camper registration packet containing check in location, health/release forms, emergency contact info, and a list of things to bring will be emailed to all registered campers in the spring.
Sample Daily Schedule
- 9:00am Instruction - fundamental skills training; grip, stance, posture, pitching, putting, bunker play and full swing
- 12:00pm Lunch (included in full day camp price, half day campers depart)
- 1:00pm Course play with staff. On-course instruction on club selection, course management, rules and etiquette
- 4:00pm Full day campers depart
Umstead Pines Golf and Swim Club
Designed by golf course architect, George Cobb, construction on the golf course began in 1957. Total 18 hole construction was completed in 1962. The stunning 18 hole layout challenges the experienced golfer, while its clever yet classic design make the course enjoyable for all players, scratch to novice. The practice areas consisting of a driving range and separate areas for putting and chipping/pitching provide ample opportunity for all players to develop their games. Umstead Pines’ family oriented environment makes this a perfect venue for all levels of players to hone their skills and enjoy the great game of golf.
