GETTING TO KNOW OUR DIRECTORS.

First and Last Name: Vinny Carlesi - Director of Nike Baseball Camp.

Location(s) you direct: Caldwell University, Lawrenceville School, and Mercy College.

How long have you been coaching baseball?  29 years.

How long have you been directing the Nike Baseball Camp? 10 years.

Why did you start coaching baseball?  Love of the game.  I entered into a family business.

Favorite Camp Drill or Activity at Camp?  Instructing players on the fundamentals of the game.

What is the key to an incredible camp experience for you?  Combining the combination of teaching a camper to improve his skills but also making sure he has an enjoyable experience as well.

Your perfect camper on Day #1 arrives with what qualities?  Someone who is outgoing and not reserved.  A camper who is willing to learn and takes instructions well.

Which college or pro Coach do you admire and why?  I admired Joe Torre because he was able to combine his skills as a coach with caring for his players.

Which college or pro player do you make it a point to watch play? I also liked watching Derek Jeter play because his approach was always spot on.

What message would you like parents to understand prior to camp?  It will take a little while for your son to become comfortable at camp so if he calls on the first night and is a little homesick you must give him some time to adjust to camp.

Coaching Tip

Gripping the Bat - When gripping the bat make sure the bat lays in your fingers and not your palm.  An easy way to make sure you are holding the bat correctly is to see if your knocking knuckles are lined up.  If they are not, or if the knocking knuckles on one hand are lined up with the top knuckles on your opposite hand then you are choking the bat. When you hit you want to be flexible and you must be able to make fast, quick movements.  When you choke the bat you become stiff and inflexible which will drastically affect your swing.  Holding the bat in the palm of your hand will also prevent you from rolling your wrist over once you make contact with the ball.
