Top Benefits of Summer Sports Camps for Child Development

Top benefits of a sports camp

Youth sports contribute to a wealth of positive outcomes for kids. As the parent of a young athlete, you’ve probably seen this in action. Maybe your child has gotten a confidence boost from developing their skills. Maybe they’ve met new friends. Maybe they’ve experienced the joy of achieving a big goal!

Sports camps supercharge these benefits by providing a fun, intensive experience that gives structure to the summer and offers an opportunity for your young athlete to deepen their love of their sport, connect with other athletes, and learn new techniques and skills.

And remember—camp isn’t just for the “varsity” level athlete. Your child doesn’t have to be an expert in their sport to get a ton out of this experience. From half-day sessions through overnight camps, from beginner-level offerings through advanced, there are a range of camps available to suit every schedule and skill level.

So whether your young athlete is ready for a sleepaway camp or not—or whether they’re a novice in their sport or have been honing their skills for years—there’s a summer camp out there that’s right for them.

Six ways sports camps benefit young athletes

Let’s dive into six on-and-of-the-field benefits that summer camps offer. 💪

1. Skill development

This is one of the most rewarding parts of a sports camp. Young athletes will jump at any chance to level up in the sport they love. Camp gives them a fun, fast-paced way to do just that. Coaches and staff will assess campers’ levels and areas for improvement at the beginning of camp, then work with them in a specialized way to make sure they target the skills that will help them shine on the field, court, track, etc.

This makes camp a great opportunity for young athletes to experience the satisfaction of how working hard can lead to new achievements in their sport. We’ve heard many stories from parents of how their (exhausted but very happy!) child has talked their ear off on the car ride home about a breakthrough in their sport. (“Dad, guess what? I’m a three-point shooter now!”)

To maximize skill development, it’s a good idea to look for a camp with an optimal staff-to-camper ratio. This ensures your young athlete will get the personalized attention that helps them make the most of their time.

2. New friendships

Many adults will tell you some of their lifelong friendships were made playing sports. Maybe you had this experience!

Sports camps take this to another level, bringing together young athletes who all love the same sport to spend many hours a day training together. This is, of course, in addition to all the typical camp bonding experiences: meals together, general socializing, and fun activities such as recreational pool time.

We’re always pleasantly surprised by the number of comments we get from parents that speak to the social side of camp. We love hearing about how their child came out of their shell at camp, or how they made new friends who they wouldn’t have met otherwise.

For athletes to succeed in their sport, this ability to build relationships with teammates is really important. And of course, it’s a life skill that will serve them well “off the field” too.

3. Structured time

The “dog days” of summer are great. Everyone needs days (or even maybe a week or two) to simply kick back and relax. But too much time with nothing on the schedule can lead to bad habits or complaints of “I’m bored!”

A summer camp breaks things up with structured time that parallels what kids are used to during the school year, when their days are often neatly arranged into different classes and activities. This structure helps establish a good routine and provides some much-needed organization to their summer schedule. Balance is everything—and camp definitely helps balance the summer out.

For parents with busy days, sending kids to camp can help free up time for work, errands…or maybe your own fun plans, too.

4. Independence

By now, your child may be fairly used to their routines at home, at school, and on their sports teams. And being “in the swing of things” like this is definitely good! But it’s also good to change things up with a new experience—and this is something camp can provide.

Camp can help your child develop independence by pushing them to navigate a new setting, away from their typical friends, family, and training routines. They’ll get feedback from new coaches, try new drills and exercises, and navigate on- and off-the-field interactions with new teammates.

For sleepaway campers, this may be the most time they’ve spent away from home on their own. Finding their way in a different environment helps them build confidence and trust in their ability to handle new situations.

As they grow older, these experiences provide a good training ground for much bigger milestones…such as moving into the dorms at college!

5. Physical activity

This may seem obvious, but it’s worth calling out, since it’s such an important part of the athletic camp experience.

It’s no secret that nowadays, both for young people and adults, many of our leisure activities can be pretty sedentary. A sports camp is a great way to get your child out of a screen-centric environment and into one that’s built around movement and real-world interactions, in many cases outdoors.

In short: camp gets them moving!

In addition to providing lots of practice and targeted training in their sport, the intensive, high-energy camp schedules help young athletes experiment with testing their physical limits—and building good exercise habits that will serve them well into adulthood, too.

6. Last but not least…FUN!

The other five points are important, but really, we think this is the “secret sauce” of the sports camp experience.

Camp is really fun!

All of the other benefits of sports camps are possible because they provide kids with a place where they can grow their passion for the sport they love, and play it in a positive, safe, and supportive environment.

We’ve seen it time and again: when camp is built on a foundation of fun, everything else just clicks.

So when you’re picking out your camp, make sure to look for one that prioritizes creating a fun and nurturing atmosphere. This will help young athletes play at their best.

And BE at their best, too!
