Summer Camp Tip: Rally the Friends & Family
Summer may be the kids' time off… but parents are responsible for the planning, booking, and transporting to fill all that time! We are firm believers in uniting the village to build a successful summer. Line up those carpools to save gas money and get the kids with their friends and cousins while they have a blast at camp. Here are some tips as you think about planning your summer camp:
I am unashamedly a Google Sheet maniac. There is no better way to have a shared place where everyone can see each other's plans and interests, vacations and tournaments, camps and classes. Make a copy of this Summer Camp Planning Google Sheet. Share it out with the parents of your kids' ideal camp mates. Don't forget to set the “Sharing” settings to let them edit!
The Getaway within Getaway:
Plan a vacation with your close-knit family friends so that there is a camp nearby. Book a house rental with tons of beds near a university or school that is loaded with summer options. You may be tucked away in the green, peacefulness of Lake Forest, IL. Or plan a fun week of Broadway and shows in New York City. The US Sports Camp platform has a variety of sports and academic opportunities for all kid types. The end result: someone drops the kids off Monday to Friday, while the adults get their own adventures or tranquility.
Sleep Away Success:
Going to sleep away camp can seem a bridge too far for some tweens, and yet not a big deal for younger kids. The best medicine to the homesickness/nervousness of being shipped off to camp is to bring a friend. Most of the time, friends can be accommodated to share a room or be in the same group for activities. While the greatest reward of camp is breaking out of your mold and making NEW friends… it is a big help to have a trusted companion into this foray of independence.
