NIKE BASKETBALL CAMP IN WISCONSIN FAQ
- What is RYG Athletics?
RYG Athletics is a sports camp company that operates some of the highest-rated NIKE Sports Camps around the country every summer.
We’re on a mission to restore joy in sports, one camp at a time.
Our founder, Luke Gromer has a decade of experience coaching basketball and 15 years of experience in the camp space. He also hosts the Better Coaching podcast and delivered a TEDx talk on the Missing Ingredient in Youth Sports.
- What does it mean that this camp is by RYG Athletics?
NIKE Sports Camps partners with coaches/operators around the country to run NIKE Sports Camps. NIKE Sports Camps serves as the marketing, sales, and customer support engine, while coaches/operators like us (RYG Athletics) deliver the camp experience.
- Will this be the same as the NIKE Basketball Camp we attended last summer?
No, the camps were previously run by Lou Chapman. He is no longer an operator of NIKE Basketball Camps.
The camps are now run by RYG Athletics and will have a brand new director, coaches, and camp curriculum.
- What’s different about an RYG Athletics’ NIKE Basketball Camp?
Our program pillars (what we want athletes to experience) are fun, challenge, support, and connection.
We intentionally integrate a leadership and mindset curriculum into our camps. This curriculum is based on the research of leading sports psychologists and experienced coaches. The goal of it is to help your athlete improve their mental performance and leadership skills.
- We use a modern, constraints-led approach on court. These ideas have been shaped by the latest research on motor learning and effective coaching We believe it's the fastest way to help athletes grow AND it's more fun for athletes Your athletes may come home each day and say, "we played a bunch of games," but the reality is that they were exposed to a lot of intentionally designed activities using constraints that are designed to help skills emerge that help them succeed in competition. There will be very few things we do at camp that are "on air" or lacking a defender. The learning will be messier and have more "mistakes," but that's exactly what leads to motor learning and transfer to competition.
Some resources that have shaped our camp curriculum: Transforming Basketball, SAVI Basketball, Basketball Immersion, Dr. Rob Gray's work.
We use a principles of play curriculum at our camps that aims to teach your athlete how to play the game. Our basketball curriculum focuses on helping your athlete learn how to play with vision, handle pressure, space the floor in transition and the half court, finish around the rim, take better shops, and keep and finish advantage, and play effective team defense. We use either dedicated classroom time or brief, focused film sessions to show and reinforce the concepts we’re teaching and learning.
- What can we expect from the director and camp staff?
All of our directors commit to learning the name of every athlete at their camp session by the end of the second day of camp
The only way this happens is if we build real relationships and give real coaching to every player at camp
Our directors do all of the teaching and demonstrations, then ensure that things are operating efficiently at each basket. When things are running smoothly, they're bouncing between baskets offering individual and group feedback.
We put time, energy, and money into finding awesome coaches and/or basketball players to be a part of our camp staff as basket coaches.
We pay them well above industry average so that we can attract and keep awesome staff members.
TRANSPORTATION
Transportation is not provided by the camp to or from any airports. If you are flying to or from camp, we recommend using an airport shuttle service. Please schedule flights as close as you can to the check-in times on the first day and check-out times on the last day.
