Camp Overview

Train, Compete, Improve – Join Nike Swim Camp This Summer

Join UNM's Head Coach, Naya Higashijima, and her staff for the 2nd annual Nike Swim Camp at the University of New Mexico in summer 2026! This camp is designed to help competitive swimmers enhance their understanding of swimming fundamentals. With a focus on stroke refinement and personalized feedback, participants will develop a deeper knowledge of proper stroke mechanics and discover ways to improve their individual performance.

Extra Starts & Turns Clinic:
You can add the Extra Starts & Turns Clinic to turn your camp into a 5-day experience!

This camp is open to any and all entrants. For your safety and benefit, we recommend you have competitive swimming experience (e.g., U.S.S. age group, national qualifiers, high school swimmers, or summer league swimmers) and can swim at least 50 meters in all four competitive strokes: fly, back, breast and freestyle. This camp is not affiliated with the University of New Mexico

    Naya Higashijima joined the Lobo Family in April of 2023 after spending the previous four years as an associate head coach at SMU. Higashijima, a two-time NCAA All-American swimmer at Oregon State, has nearly 20 years of Division I coaching experience prior to coming to UNM.

    In her first season with UNM, despite some roster limitations that saw her team have about 10 fewer members than other conference teams, helped the Lobos turn in their highest Mountain West point total in five years. The team also had a Mountain West Diver of the Week twice, and a Freshman of the Week as well.

    In her four seasons with SMU, the Mustangs finished second at the American Athletic Conference Championships (finishing second in 2020, 2021 and 2022). She also helped oversee 11 individual conference titles along with three relay titles. In 2020, she mentored butterfly specialist Erin Trahan to All-America honors, while flyer Luana Alonso earned an invite to the 2023 NCAA Championships in the 100.

    Phoebe Campbell joined the Akron coaching staff as the assistant swimming coach in August 2025. Prior to joining Akron, Campbell was the assistant swim coach at the University of New Mexico where she oversaw recruiting, organized travel and developed swim and dryland training.

    Campbell spent the 2022-23 season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Texas A&M men’s swim team, where she not only coached but handled analytics for the Aggies. In 2023, Texas A&M had swimmers qualify for NCAA, FINA Worlds and Open Water National Championships.

    While with Texas A&M she also served as an assistant coach with the Aggie Swim Club, and she has a long history with the Aggies, having served as a coach and camp counselor with the Texas A&M Swim Camps starting in 2019.

    Campbell has also served as a collegiate assistant coach at Vassar College, and she started her collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at Ball State. She has also served as the head site coach for the Arkansas Dolphins. With the Dolphins, she wrote and supervised all practices, coached athletes to sectional and NCSA qualifying times, while also overseeing the development and progression of the swim program.

    In addition to her work with the Dolphins, Campbell also served as the aquatics director for Cabot Parks and Recreation, directing and coordinating all events and programs for the Cabot Aquatic Park. She also supervised a staff of over 50 employees, while coordinating various leagues and championships. She earned her B.A. from Henderson State in 2016, where she was a member of the swim team.

Camp Details

This summer, the University of New Mexico is offering one week of day camp (9:00am-3:00pm) for ages 9-18. Campers will be introduced to drills and techniques that provide a competitive edge to each swimmer. Upon arrival at camp, campers are placed in groups with other swimmers having similar abilities and goals. Our camp staff will do their best to accommodate your needs, keeping in consideration your experience and desire to improve.

2026 OVERVIEW

  • Dates: June 8-11
  • Age Group: 9-18
  • Gender: Coed
  • Camp Type: Day Camp
  • Schedule: 9:00am-3:00pm each day.
  • Check-In: Between 8:30am-9:00am on Monday at Armond H. Seidler Natatorium.
  • Check-Out: Check-out takes place each day at 3:00pm.
  • Lunch: Lunch is not provided. Please bring a packed lunch.
  • Program: The Stroke Technique program focus and design of the curriculum is to provide competitive swimmers an exciting week of camp where they are challenged to improve their stroke technique through mental, technical, and physical training. Each camper will receive personalized stroke instruction from the UNM Coaching Staff across all four strokes, with an optional starts and turns training session available on Friday.
  • Starts & Turns Clinic: We are offering an optional “starts and turns” clinic this summer for this session. The Starts & Turns Clinic begins Friday, June 12th at 9:00am and concludes at 3:00pm. Campers check-in at 8:30am on Friday morning.

Daily Emphasis: Day 1 - Freestyle, Day 2 - Backstroke, Day 3 - Butterfly, Day 4 - Breast stroke, Day 5: Starts and Turns (Optional)

INSTRUCTION, EQUIPMENT & FACILITY

  • Ratio: 1:10 staff-to-camper ratio
  • Groupings: Campers are grouped by age, ability, and experience per the director's discretion.
  • Equipment Needed: Please bring your water swimsuit, swim cap, goggles and towel(s)
  • Facility: University of New Mexico Pool
  • Medical Protocol: Most camps have an athletic trainer on-site to help with illness or injury. In case of an emergency, campers will be transported to the nearest hospital.

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation is not provided. Campers are responsible for getting to and from camp on their own. There is no supervision before or after camp hours so please make arrangements to pick up your child on time.

Facility

Armond H. Seidler Natatorium

The University of New Mexico swimming and diving team practices and competes year-round at the Olympic Pool in the Seidler Natatorium, located in Johnson Gymnasium. The facility is an Olympic-sized pool and includes a 25-meter pool, which serves as an auxiliary training tank for the team. The Olympic pool is named after former UNM professor Armond Seidler, who designed the pool.

SUPERVISION
Campers are supervised by staff during camp hours. Drugs, alcohol and tobacco are strictly prohibited, and constitute, along with general misconduct, grounds for dismissal from camp without a refund.
