  • Matt Barreau

    Matthew Barreau

    Track & Field Director

Matthew Barreau has over 20 years of collegiate and 7 years of high school coaching experience. Born and raised in TrackTown, USA, he has had a lifelong passion for the sports of cross country and track and field. His goal is to help foster a sense of passion and love of the sport in others, and encourage the drive and commitment for those he impacts to become better athletes and better people.

    Matt Barreau

    Matthew Barreau

    Track & Field Director

At each coaching stop, Barreau inspired great changes in the culture and performances of his athletes, amassing 10 All-Americans, over 50 National Qualifiers, 30 Conference Records, 100 Conference Champions, and 300 All-Conference athletes in the process. For his athletes efforts, he has been named Conference Coach of the year eight times, and Regional Coach of the Year three times.

At Lewis & Clark University in Portland, OR, his athletes rewrote nearly every record in cross country and track, including individual and team performances. Inheriting teams that had finished last in the conference prior to his arrival, his men’s and women’s teams never finished lower than third place during his time there, and were both second place in his final year.

At Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA, his athletes ascended to heights never before seen not only at the school level, but also set standards at the Conference and Region level that have still not been surpassed. The women’s cross country team earned the school’s first-ever National Team berth in just his fourth year there, while the men’s cross country teams earned three straight national bids and back-to-back Region Titles. Their finishes of 11th and 3rd places in 2016 & 2017 at the NCAA National XC Championships remain the two highest finishes by a team in Conference & Region history.

Barreau also spent time coaching at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he was largely responsible for the men’s sprinting success, including multiple NCAA D1 National Qualifiers. In all, he has coaching experience at all levels of the NCAA, NAIA, and high school, with stops at Adams State, Western Oregon, Portland State, Concordia (OR), and high schools in Oregon and Arizona. He has also served as President of Division 3 Cross Country Coaches for the USTFCCCA.
