Diana Taurasi: A Career Built on Championship Mentality

Diana Taurasi is one of the most decorated players in basketball history. Known for her competitive fire and creativity on the court, she’s a three-time WNBA champion, a six-time Olympic gold medalist, and the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer.

Taurasi grew up in California and attended Don Lugo High School, where she was named the 2000 Naismith and Parade Magazine high school player of the year. She attended the University of Connecticut, where she helped lead its women’s team to three straight NCAA titles. In 2004, she was the first pick in the WNBA draft, joining the Phoenix Mercury and earning Rookie of the Year honors. She went on to play at the Mercury for two decades before retiring in 2025. During her time in Phoenix, she brought home three WNBA championships, made the all-WNBA first team ten times, and became one of a select few players to earn WNBA Finals MVP honors more than once. She still holds the record for most career points as the first, and so far only, WNBA player to surpass 10,000. (A threshold she crossed in 2023 with one of her signature three-pointers.)

In addition to her impact on the WNBA, she’s won six Euroleague championships and six consecutive Olympic gold medals, an all-time record in men’s and women’s basketball history.

Wherever she played, Taurasi brought her physical toughness, skillful shooting, and high basketball IQ. She’s especially known for her clutch mentality, with an impressive highlight reel of last-second baskets that led her teams to victory in elimination games and championship runs.

Passing on a Passion for the Game

As a coach, Taurasi draws on this playing experience to help young athletes build a similar mental resilience—so they can thrive in high-pressure situations, too.Taurasi’s excited to be building her coaching career now because she believes it’s an amazing time to be a young basketball player. The women’s game is taking off, the youth development system is growing, and there are more and more opportunities for student-athletes who put in the work. She sees coaching as a way to bolster youth basketball and give back to a sport she loves. Taurasi says being in the camp environment with young players brings her back to her own experiences attending—and later working as a counselor—at youth camps. According to her, “There’s nothing like being in a gym with young hungry players who like basketball!” She enjoys discovering who the campers are as players and as people, and figuring out how to motivate them to dig deep each day of camp. As Taurasi puts it: “My playing career may be over, but my basketball career isn’t.” She loves watching players deepen their technical skills, work hard, and grow as teammates. More than anything, she relishes the opportunity to pass along her passion for the game to a new generation of players.
