Getting to Know: Dale Wellman, Head Coach Nebraska Wesleyan University
Head Coach Dale Wellman will direct Nike Basketball Camps first ever Nebraska location! Located in the state's capital of Lincoln, the Nike Boys Basketball Camp at Nebraska Wesleyan University will offer a comprehensive, collegiate-style basketball program to players ages 10-17. Dale Wellman has been coaching basketball for 16 years and just finished his second season as Head Men's Basketball Coach at NWU. Nebraska Wesleyan led all of NAIA Division II in scoring at 92.5 points per game, going over 100 points in 10 of 26 games.
1. What made you get into coaching?
Three reasons: 1) I’m from Kentucky, where basketball is a way of life, so I didn’t want to be without it after playing in college. 2) I love competition and it allowed me to continue to chase that need in my life. 3) I recognized what my college coach did for me off the court and the lessons he taught me that went beyond basketball, and I thought that would be a great thing to pass along to other student-athletes.
2. What is your favorite camp drill and why?
At our level, we led the country in scoring at 96.3 points per game. We play fast, so I love full court drills. Transition offensive and defensive is so important. Along with fundamentals in the half court on both ends of the floor, we want to talk about good transition offense and defense, because the ball changes directions a lot in a real game. Younger players have to understand to play with a purpose in transition, and I love to see kids learning while getting up and down.
3. What is the key to an incredible camp experience for you?
It all starts with having a great staff that is enthusiastic to work with kids. The more involved and passionate they are to teach while showing the campers a good time, the better the camp will be.

5. What’s in your basketball bag?
Dry Erase board and markers, bubble gum, throat lozenges, whistle, and about $5 in change.
