On staff this summer is Marcus Titus, a retired Deaf American Swimmer who has had an exciting and successful 15 year career in swimming.

Starting his career in swimming at the age of 15 at Flowing Wells High School, he realized early on he had a knack for competing. Before graduating high school, he won the 100yd Breastroke and was named the 5A Arizona High School State Champion going a time of 54.65. After high school, Marcus swam for Arizona State University his Freshman year where he broke their school record. His sophomore year, he transferred to the University of Arizona and finished his college swimming career there. During that time he broke their school record for the 100yd Breastroke, was a 12 time All-American, and helped the team win the 2008 NCAA Championships.

Marcus’s passion carried through his career starting from high school through college and continued afterwards when he went semi-professional. In 2008, Marcus qualified for his first US Olympic Trials in the 100m Breastroke and though he did not place that year, he did in the following two Olympic Trials in 2012 (8th place) and 2016 (6th place). In between these qualifying years, Marcus competed at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico where he swam the 100m Breastroke (Bronze) and the breastroke leg of the 4x100 medley relay (Silver). Also in the same year, he swam in the Deaf World Championships in Coimbra, Portugal where he won 5 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze. In 2013, Marcus served as a coach for the Deaf Olympic Team and has continued to support the deaf community by being a spokesperson for deaf and hard-hearing athletes in the swimming world.

Marcus currently works at the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind here in Tucson, AZ as a Physical Education teacher. Through this role, he can continue to inspire his students and show them that no matter what life hands you, you can still be successful as long as you are willing to work for it.
