Tim Johnson
Camp Director
Tim Johnson is the head teaching professional at Recreation Park Golf Course in Long Beach. He is a Class A1 member of the PGA and serves as camp director for the Nike Golf Camps.
Tim has been a dedicated golf instructor for nearly 25 years, teaching more than 30,000 lessons and helping players of all levels reach their goals. He spent 13 years as the head teaching professional at El Dorado Park in Long Beach before moving to Recreation Park 18, where he continues to serve the community.
A PGA of America member since 2004, Tim began his apprenticeship in 1996 and later ran the Nike Golf Learning Center at Dominguez Hills. His innovative teaching competition, America’s Golf Coach, became the first of its kind within the PGA of America and has earned multiple award nominations, including the Bill Strausbaugh and Horton Smith awards. He has also been nominated for PGA Teacher of the Year at both the chapter and section levels.
Tim founded the Tee Off Together Foundation, a nonprofit that introduces golf to underserved youth and provides free access to the Long Beach Golf Academy. His charity events—the Marlin Briscoe Charity Classic and Legends of the Beach—support this mission.
In addition to winning the 2010 Southern California PGA Pro Junior Championship, Tim has coached numerous juniors who have gone on to compete in NCAA golf, including LPGA Tour player Demi Runas. He has also contributed to local high school programs, helping the Los Alamitos girls’ team achieve an undefeated season in 2018.
Tim is passionate about getting people hooked on the game and continues to grow the sport through teaching, coaching, and community outreach. His first book, American Golf Coach, is set for release in 2019.
