Ultimate Tip: How to Take Your Game from High School to Elite College Level
Michael Fairley, Head Coach of the Nike Ultimate Camp at University of Central Florida this summer and Captain of the UCF Men's Ultimate team Dogs of War, offers young players a tip on how to take their game from the high school level to the elite college level.
Fairley explains, "The easiest way to take your game from High School to Elite College is by learning how to reset the disc. Coming in as a freshman with the ability to break the mark around and inside with constancy will instantly make you invaluable. If you are tall like me, use your length and large step out to get around marks. If shorter, work on different release points to effectively break the mark. A throwing practice that helped me out was the Kung Fu Throwing program. There is a part in which you pivot then throw and then high/lows/far outs which, if done often, will help with breaking the mark. Having this skill will vastly help you and increase your chances of earning a starting spot on your college team as a freshman!"
Michael Fairley currently captains the UCF Dogs of War, a top 10 team in the nation. When Michael came to UCF, he made it onto the Dogs of War team as freshman and started on the O-line. He later finished his first College Nationals with 16 goals, good enough for T-4 in the tournament. That summer he played for Florida United and came back and play for UCF on the team that finished T-3rd at Nationals. This past summer (2015), Michael played for Atlanta’s Chain Lightning (an elite-level men’s ultimate frisbee club team) and finished 5th at Regionals.
