Coaches Corner - The Importance of Consistency
Going for too many winners and missing shots? Take a minute and read what Tyler Thomson, Head Women's Tennis Coach at the College of William & Mary, has to say about the importance of consistency.
"Every time I hit the ball I aim for the middle "T" on the other side of the net . . . that way, if I miss my target I still know that my shot will probably land in!" I was once told that these were the words of Bjorn Borg, winner of 5 consecutive men's Wimbledon singles titles. Whether or not these words were actually uttered by the great Swede himself, they still offer some of the greatest and simplest strategic advice for young and old players alike. To beat most players, hitting lots of winners is not necessary. In fact, they're not necessary at all! YOU can beat anyone in the world if you simply get every ball back, and aiming for the middle T on every shot is a great pathway toward that goal. Don't worry about hitting great shots, just focus on MAKING every shot, and the chances are that your opponent will miss more than you - which will probably mean that you will be walking away with a trophy in hand. If this plan was good enough for Borg to win 5 Wimbledon titles, then it's probably good enough for you, too!
