Nike Tennis Camps welcomes a new week long tennis camp at the University of New Orleans this summer. This junior tennis camp is directed by former ATP Tour player Abrie du Plooy and Head Coach of the New Orleans Privateers, Burzis Kanga!

Nike Tennis Camp in New Orleans, LA

The Nike Tennis Camp at the University of New Orleans offers two weeks of Overnight and Day camp for players of all abilitiy levels (ages 9-18) and also offers a High Performance tennis training program for top junior level players. This youth tennis camp consists of a core tennis program that includes technical, tactical, physical, and mental aspects of tennis for various skill levels, including specific tournament tennis training for higher level players.

Abrie du Plooy

Abrie du Plooy

Abrie played on the ATP tour and has 19 Years of teaching experience.  He is also USPTR Certified. He is currently in the top 15 ranking in the USA Men’s 35 and currently coaches top ranked players in the nation.

He worked with ATP and WTA players such as Chanelle Scheepers( currently top 200 on the WTA tour, Wesley Whitehouse( top 200 player) and top US Juniors that are currently playing division 1 college tennis, and was ranked in the top 15 in the US in the Men’s 35. Abrie is a Promoter of 15 professional events( $50,000, $25,000 and $15,000 events for men and women) and won the USPTR International event in 2001 in the men’s 30′s.  He played at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville for the team that ranked # 2 in college tennis.  He graduated with a degree in Sport Management. Abrie played in the South African junior team and speaks Afrikaans and English.

Burzis Kanga

Entering his eighth year as head coach for the New Orleans Privateers, Burzis Kanga has developed a team that has a reputation for competing at a very high level on the court, while also achieving lofty goals in the classroom.

Overall, Kanga is in his third stint at the helm of the tennis program, and was hired on Feb. 22, 2008 as the program was reinstated as part of the rebuilding efforts on the Lakefront.

Kanga previously coached at UNO from 1986-89 and again from 2003-06 before the program was put on hiatus due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina.

No stranger to UNO prior to his stints as head coach, Kanga was a member of the Privateer tennis program from 1980-83, earning his Bachelors of Science in Business in 1984.
While playing on the Lakefront, Kanga amassed an 81-9 mark and became the only member of either UNO tennis team to achieve All-American honors, doing so as a senior.

During his time on the UNO team, he was ranked as the top player in Louisiana for the under-21 age group. He also played professionally on the satellite tennis circuits of the USA, Europe and Mexico.
Since returning to the Lakefront in 2008, Kanga has made steady progress in establishing both the men’s and women’s programs – both on the court and in the classroom.

Chris is a former top 19 ATP player in doubles, Top 210 in singles, and played all the Grand Slams.  He was a semi-finalist in the Australian Open as well as an All-American at the University of Tennessee with Chris Woodruff.  He was a South African Davis Cup player and is currently an ATP coach.

2015 University of New Orleans Nike Tennis Camp Information

This year we are offering two weeks of week long tennis and day (9:00am-4:00pm) camp for kids ages 9-18 of all skill levels. In addition to the All Skills Program, we offer our High Performance Tennis Training Program during both weeks. Upon arrival, all participants are evaluated by the staff so that their own instructional needs can be addressed throughout the week.

High Performance Training Program

The High Performance Training Program is geared towards tournament level and ranked players looking to improve their tournament results, learn winning strategies, and work on mental toughness. High performance training will include video analysis, matches against the pros, point oriented drills, fitness and footwork drills as well as match play critique from professional coaches. 



Sunday at 3:00pm for all campers at the New Orleans Tennis Facility Tennis Courts.


Friday at 11:30am.

Day Camp Program Schedule

  • Day Camp runs 9:00am to 4:00pm (Monday through Thursday, check in on Sunday is at 1:30pm).
  • Campers will need to bring swimwear as they will get the opportunity to use the pool located right next to the courts.


University Tennis Center: The University Tennis Center is one of the premier tennis facilities in the south, featuring 20 deco turf hard courts and six red clay courts. The facility is located on UNO's East Campus, adjacent to Lakefront Arena and Maestri Field.

In addition to serving as home to the UNO men's and women's tennis teams, the facility serves as hosted Loyola University, a number of local high schools, USTA adult leagues, the Louisiana regional and state high school championships, the St. Jude High School tennis championships, the Susan G. Komen tennis championships and numerous junior and adult tennis camps.


2015: Dorms TBD | Overnight campers will stay in the dorms on campus. Campers can request roommates, otherwise they will be placed in rooms based on gender and age.


All meals are provided for overnight campers starting with dinner on check-in day. Lunch is provided for Day campers Mon-Thurs.

Evening Activities

Overnight campers will participate in a variety of fun evening activities which may include pizza, game and/or movie nights, talent shows, games and free play at courts, and a music/acting evening.

Designated Airport

New Orleans International Airport


Nike Tennis Camp does not provide any transportation to/from camp from airport, train stations or bus depots.  If you fly into camp, we recommend that you fly into New Orleans International Airport and schedule a shuttle from the airport to camp. If you have a camper arriving by air and is deemed an “unaccompanied minor” by the airlines and must be met by a camp staff or shuttle company employee, there may be a fee that needs to be paid in advance of camp. You will still have to arrange transportation to/from camp. Please call 1-800-645-3226 two weeks prior to camp to provide camper’s flight and shuttle information.

Registration Packet

A detailed camper registration packet containing check in location, health/release forms, emergency contact info, and a list of things to bring will be emailed to all registered campers in the Spring. Our health and release forms do not require a doctor's signature and they will be collected on the first day of camp.
