5 common mistakes field hockey players make and how to fix them

Common mistakes field hockey

As a field hockey player, it takes a lot of instincts, knowledge, and discipline to be the best player you can be. Here are 5 common mistakes that field hockey players make and tips on how Camp Directors at Nike Field Hockey Camps help fix them.

Over-thinking before the game

It is very common to think about the game the day before, however over-thinking your competition can impact your results. Thoughts of doubt before the start of the game can negatively effect your play. Having the fear of failure can lead to thinking about losing and making unnecessary mistakes on the turf. Clear your mind and focus on what you are capable of achieving and how you will help your team. Many athletes find it helpful to create a pre-game ritual to help them focus on the game ahead, drown out negative self-talk, and get geared up and excited for what is to come.

Ball Watching

Field hockey is a constant game of movement no matter who is in possession of the ball. When you do not have possession of the ball, it can be common to find yourself stuck watching the game. Instead of only watching the ball, cutting to get open and distracting the defense can help your teammates score. This will help you to read what they are doing and allow yourself to get into open space for the next play.

Not performing well under pressure

During an intense match, it is very important to stay in control. Panicking under pressure can happen when you do not mentally prepare for a game. Mental preparation is just as important physical practice. If you feel yourself becoming panicked take several deep breaths to help lower your heart rate, change your focus to that action of the game, and think about the task at hand.

Passing to players instead of space

One problem a field hockey player can have is is directing the pass to the wrong area on the field. When making a pass, players should direct their teammate by making the pass to the open space in front of them, not at them or toward their feet. This type of pass is sometimes known as a square ball and can be easily intercepted during games. Passing ahead of your teammate will allow them to continue their momentum forward and keep pushing the ball downfield.

Complaining about the umpires

Frustrating calls made by the umpire happen during every game. However, this does not mean you should let it bother you the entire game. Umpires make mistakes or make a call you do not agree with. Bouncing back from a poor call will allow you to move on with the game and compete.

Avoiding these common mistakes will help you reach the next level in this sport. Utilize these field hockey tips during your season and learn more at a Nike Field Hockey Camp this summer!
