Football Tip: Receiving Technique

Football Receiving Tip Althete Catching Ball

Moving the ball downfield to score a touchdown is the goal of football. Offensively, you can either run or pass the ball to gain yards. Passing the ball successfully requires an accurate throw by the quarterback and a catch by the receiver. Nike Flag Football Camp Coaches and Contact Football Camp Coaches emphasize the importance of proper technique when catching the football.

Before the ball is even thrown, it is important for receivers to practice running routes at game speed. The timing between quarterback and receiver improves with lots of repetitions. When you (receiver) make a break during the route, you should have your hands up, palms away from your body, and thumbs together to give the quarterback a target. Be sure your arms are not fully extended, and your hands are about chest high. Depending on if the ball is thrown above or below your waist, you will change your hand position.

  • When the ball is thrown above your waist: You want to have your fingers pointing up and your thumbs touching. Use just your hands to catch the ball before bringing it into your body.
  • When the ball is thrown below your waist: You will flip your hands so that they are down, and your two pinky fingers are closest together. This way you can secure the ball from underneath.

Once you have caught the ball, how can you be sure to hold onto it so it doesn’t come loose? US Sports Camps Football coaches teach a concept known as Five Points of Contact. The five points include the ball carrier’s fingertips, palm, forearm, bicep, and chest. To ensure the ball is secure, players should focus on feeling all five points of contact while holding the football. Athletes can practice this anytime, even just walking around their home.

There are other factors affecting how you catch a pass, such as body position and defensive coverage. These are general guidelines and as a receiver, you will need to improvise at times to catch the ball. Practicing catching will build your confidence on the field, and the quarterback will have confidence throwing you the ball.
