5 Football Tryout Tips

Football QB

Trying out for a new football team takes courage. For some athletes, this will be the first time they are meeting the coaches or other players. It is important to make a positive first impression. Coaches will not only be observing you on the field but also how you act away from the field, so be aware that you will be evaluated on more than just athletic ability. Contact Football Camps provide an excellent opportunity to practice not only football skills but also how to put your best foot forward to new coaches. Consider these five tips to help you with your next tryout!

  1. Set goals for yourself: Take some time before the tryout to write down a few goals you have. When thinking of goals, be sure they are things that you have control over. For example, one goal might be to make the team, but you don’t have control over that, the coaches do. A better goal might be to finish every play with max effort until the whistle blows. Notice how the second example might ultimately contribute to the first goal of making the team.
  2. Develop a “Never Quit” attitude: Young players should understand that improvement doesn’t happen overnight. It takes intentional practice over time to get better. There will be hardships and setbacks and maintaining a “never quit” attitude will help you keep pushing.
  3. Have a short memory: Players make mistakes all the time. Resilience is a skill that you need to practice. The biggest thing is to not allow one mistake to compound and turn into multiple mistakes. A useful tool that will help you reset is to tell yourself “next play”.
  4. Pay attention to coaches: One way to set yourself apart from the group is to be a great listener. Coaches notice when players listen to instruction and do what is asked of them. Even if you are not the most athletic, being coachable will increase your value.
  5. Do the little things right: Every detail matters during a tryout. Focusing on doing all the small details correctly will prove that you can be a reliable team member. Some players may make one or two huge plays but then mess up on small details that are unforgivable. Try to be consistent and aware of the little things.

One final thing that will also help you during a football tryout is to have fun. No matter the outcome, keep your head held high and be proud of the effort you put forth. Join us next summer at Contact Football Camps and improve your game while having a great time!
