Football Tip: 4 Tips to Staying Healthy

In football, the best ability is availability. How can you ensure that when football season comes around, you will be healthy and ready to give 100%? Taking care of yourself away from the field is equally as important as practice or conditioning. Top athletes invest time and money to take care of their bodies so they can maximize their impact on the field. Nike Football Camps suggest these four tips to help you stay healthy:

  1. Sleep: Your body needs enough sleep to function at a high level. Sleep experts recommend eight hours. Making sleep a priority will help you both mentally and physically. Having a consistent bedtime and wake up time is an easy way to ensure you are getting proper rest.
  2. Hydration: Your body needs water. A simple trick to make sure you are drinking enough water is to always keep a reusable water bottle with you and refill it throughout the day. Drink water before, during, and after your practice or game. Sports drinks are good during practice to replenish glucose, and chocolate milk is good post-practice because it has good protein for recovery.
  3. Nutrition: Your body needs food. It is important that you fuel your body with care and make healthy choices. Remember, what you put into your body will reflect on the field. A good place to start is to make note of everything you eat for an entire week and see if there are some healthy changes you could make for the following week.
  4. Stretch: Your body needs care. Stretching is a useful recovery method that is essential to maintaining healthy muscles. It is also very important for injury prevention. Similar to sleep, stretching can be included in your daily routine either right before bed or when you wake up in the morning.
