Football Tip: 3 Skills Coaches Look For in a Linebacker

Football Linebacker Tip

Linebackers must have a versatile skill set. They are responsible for stopping the run, the pass, and everything in between. The best linebackers in football share similar skills. Some of those skills include vision, tackling, and leadership. To learn more about the position and have a memorable summer camp experience, visit Contact Football Camps!

Vision – One way to separate yourself as a top linebacker is with vision and play recognition. Being able to recognize a play before the center even snaps the ball can make you a valuable defensive asset. This comes from your preparation and being familiar with different formations the offense is showing. Also, reading the play post-snap and flying to the ball will help you stand out.

Tackling - Usually, the linebacker is one of the first people that have a chance to take down the ball carrier, so tackling becomes a hugely important skill to learn. The best linebackers are very solid when it comes to their tackling, making the offense earn every single yard. Make sure you are finishing every play until the ball carrier is down.

Leadership - This may be the most important trait that a linebacker can possess. Coaches often call linebackers the “quarterback of the defense”, and for good reason. Be a relentless communicator with the rest of your defense so everyone is on the same page. A good leader is someone who does things the right way, even when no one is watching.

These are only a few key traits that coaches look for when scouting linebackers. Be aware of your strengths and continue to do those well, but also understand your weaknesses and consciously try to improve on them. Two ways to start improving are reading more football tips and attending Contact Football Camps next summer!
