Running Tips with Creighton University XC Coach Chris Gannon

Nike Creighton Gallery Boys

Nike Running Camps sat down with Creighton XC Coach Chris Gannon to talk running and tips.

Write it down. Listen to your body, take note of what your body is telling you. Keep a journal of your runs and make mention of any aches, pains, changes, how you felt pre/post run, as well as your run data.

- Keep your easy days easy. Easy days don't make us faster, they make us fitter and prep us for our days that are designed to make us faster. Keep your easy paces easy and conversational so that you can put in the necessary efforts on your hard days.

- Broken runners aren't fast runners. Being healthy is one of the most important traits of a successful runner. Running improvement comes through consistency of training over time. Take care of your aches and pains, give your body ample rest and recovery.

- Follow the plan. Too often runners get caught up in the workout and push too hard because they feel good or are running with teammates. Not every workout should be hard, not every workout should be easy. Understand the goal of the workout and how you should feel pre/post workout.

- Racing vs Running. Have a strategy when you go to the start line, there is a difference between racing and running. We run for time. We race for place. There are different scenarios for each of these; work with coaches and teammates to understand the competition and how you will execute your plan.
