Field Hockey Tips: The Basics of the Game

Field Hockey beginners will learn the fundamentals on how to play the game!

As field hockey continues to grow in popularity in the United States, more people are becoming exposed to the game! Our Nike Field Hockey Camps provide players of all skills the opportunity to learn the basics and grow their skills. If you are a beginner to field hockey, check out the top 10 most important information to know!

1. The game is typically played on an outdoor turf field.

2. Each team plays 11 players on the field at a time. The positions played by these 11 players consist of the goalie, defenders, midfielders, and forwards.

3. Defenders are also called fullbacks.

4. Rolling subs are allowed at anytime during the came.

5. Two umpires will officiate the game.

6. Field hockey is played in two halves consisting of 35 minutes each.

7. Players can only dribble and pass the ball using their field hockey stick.

8. Goals are worth one point and scored when an offensive player attacks the goalie.

9. A player should not raise their stick in an intimidating way, this is grounds for a foul.

10. Yellow and Red Cards are used to penalize players who have broken a rule.
